Summer Flatware Caddy

I seem to be on a bit of a upcycling trend lately, but I just cannot help passing up a good deal while thrifting! I recently found this little red napkin and silverware caddy for $1.99.  I liked the shape, and besides a bit of dust, it appeared to be new.

I used some Krylon Ocean Breeze I had on hand already, and did three coats, allowing each to dry for about 30 minutes in between.

I lightly sanded all over, and used a couple scrolly stencils for a faded look in the background.  Initially I was not super excited about the red peeking thru so much as I sanded.  However, remembering my summer napkins are red and white checked, I was in BUSINESS!  My favorite part of crafting (this is going to sound a bit odd I know) is when a project takes a huge turn, and goes in a different direction than I planned.  Life is like that it seems, not how we planned, but in many ways, better than we could have ever imagined.  That’s pretty deep for only one cup of coffee, let’s stay focused.

Between stencils, I dry-brushed on some acrylic paint in white, to keep the piece faded looking and touched up the edges too as they were very red by now.

I layered on one final stencil on the front, sanded again, and filled will my favorite summertime napkins, and an array of silverware that I like to call “eclectic.”  I really like how it turned out, don’t you? Not bad for a couple bucks and a little work.

What I like the most about having a silverware caddy is how easy it is to serve up a casual outdoor dinner on the patio, and get all of my dishes set aside while I am putting the final touches on the meal.  Not to mention that the silverware is easy to put away when everyone is putting their feet up and letting the kids play on warm summer evenings, I am in and out of the kitchen a bit faster.

Wishing you a wonderful, long summer full of lazy evenings relaxing with family and friends.  A big glass of iced tea, and a good book by your side.

Happy Creating & blessings to you,
Tanya 🙂

  21. Very cute and love the color!

  22. I found a similar caddy with 6 removable cups that could be filled with utensils and napkins. I had a grand vision of doing exactly what you described, carrying the caddy outside easily before we sat down to a delicious dinner. But, alas, my boys have commandeered my caddy and I have a mild suspicion they have peed in one or all of them…

When I'm less mad, I'll clean them
