How to paint patio furniture the easy way

how to paint patio furniture, diy home decor, summer decor, patio decor

I mentioned recently that I am doing a quick (well, hopefully quick) makeover on
our back patio for summer.  The challenge is to clean up and restore the existing
patio furniture that has taken quite a beating over the past 5 years.  And add some
accessories, lights & pillows that will make my space feel like a backyard retreat
perfect for a summer evening!

If you are repainting plastic, just make sure and use
a spray paint that adheres to plastic as well as metal, wicker etc… I ended up using
two cans of spray paint.  Better to buy more and have a bit leftover.  The more area
you have to cover the more paint you will need.

Here are the before pictures:

Yes, I am that person who uses their patio table as a work space in a pinch.

Ummmmmmm….yeah.  Lamesauce & uninspiring.

And I certainly didn’t feel like relaxing or entertaining in this space.
So I got busy, busted out a little elbow grease and experimented with repainting my patio
furniture to give it a new lease on life, and perhaps another summer or two.

Here is how I did it:

supplies

  • Flat or satin spray paint to match current color or completely cover with a new color
  • Scrub pads and soap, lots of water & sun to dry off your clean table and chairs
  • Wide tape to protect surfaces you don’t want to paint
  • Poster or foam core board to protect your patio or deck

I began by using a few Dollar Tree scrubby pads (like SOS pads) and a lot of water to clean the
glass table top, under the table, and gross areas that needed a deep clean.  I used
an SOS type cleaning pad since to clean the glass and areas that it wouldn’t scratch.

Depending on the type of furniture you have, use a non abrasive scrubber if you are
concerned about scratching.

After the table and chairs were dry, I used a wide masking tape (painters tape or
Frog tape will work great too) to tape the glass off to prevent over-spray.  I used a
couple poster boards from Dollar Tree to protect underneath the chairs and table
as I repainted all of the edges, legs and arms of the table and chairs.

I worked my way around each piece, holding my poster board in my other hand as
I went to create a clean edge along the glass table top, and chairs.
I allowed them to dry well, and they are now ready for another fun summer full of outdoor meals
and entertaining.

They may even be able to withstand a fort or two should the need arise.

Now that the patio table and chairs have been repainted, we are well on our way
to completing our patio makeover.

Patio Makeover to-do’s

Choose theme & colors

Clean patio furniture & repaint

Sew new patio pillows

Buy and plant new flowers and plants for this space (partially done)

Create a privacy screen (still researching design/supplies)

Find more seating if possible (I think I found a bench, need to finish it)

Gather/make final summer decor and patio stuff to make it all come together (partially done)

Patio decor deets:

  • I bought the fabric at Jo-Ann’s and recovered pillows from the living room I don’t use anymore
  • The bamboo runner is from Ross, these are easy to find for less than $10
  • The hurricane lamp is just a square glass vase from a thrift store, and I used two bags of Dollar Tree decorative rocks and glued them on with E-6000.  I usually use battery operated candles when the kids are playing outside for safety

Over the years we have lived in houses, town-homes, and just about everything but a yurt so far.
Every year we have found ways to plant flowers, tall grasses in pots, hang lights and pour some wine
to enjoy our outdoor space with friends.  No matter how big or small your budget there are always a
few simple changes you can make to either extend the life of what you already have, or see your space
in a new light.

Shop your house, look around, thrift & hot glue your way to a home you love.

I’m right there with ya, every thrifty step of the way friend!!

Everything looks so pretty, Tanya. Seems like you were just planning a backyard wedding! I have some similar chairs that need some help, so it’s really great to see how they can be refreshed. Have a wonderful week!
