Day #8: DIY Anthro Inspired Rope Basket

Making a basket out of rope couldn’t be easier when the base happens to be a $1 mesh garbage can from
the dollar store.  I found mine at Dollar Tree.

Using up a few different types and widths of rope I had on hand, some paint and a few other items from
the craft hoard, I came up with this fun, bright footed basket.

Now the hard part is trying to figure out where I am going to use it.  So far it looks cool by my fireplace,
at the foot of the stairs, with a plant in it, and full of toys.

Oy, the options! Like most things it will probably be moved around and used in many roles over time.

But for today, I will show you how fast this rope basket came together, lets craft!

Supplies:

  • Container to use as a base (plastic trash can, coffee cans, bucket, plastic bins kitty litter comes in etc…)
  • Leftover rope (I used jute and two kinds/widths of sisal)
  • Two pieces of leather about 6″ long, or to pieces of rope knotted to make handles
  • Tape, acrylic paints, brushes
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Wooden ball feet (easy to find at craft stores, but it looks great without them too!)

Directions:

Using the thickest rope that I also had the most of, I glued one end to the base of the container, and glued
it to secure it all around the base as I went.  Working my way up the container, winding and securing the rope
with a bit of hot glue here and there, I used all of it and began on the next rope.  Gluing them on the “back” of the basket
end to end, I wrapped this rope around and around, securing with a bit of hot glue here and there.  The nice thing about
using a base is the durability factor.  The body of the basket is held up by the container, not attaching the sections of
rope together like a traditional basket.

Once I was about and inch from the top, I glued the ends of my leather handles in place to the sides of the container,
then continued to wrap and secure the rope around the basket all the way to the top.
Once I was done with the body of the basket, I thought it could use a little color, and because I am convinced that
while it may be mid-January Spring is close.  And I need some color!

I taped off kind of a geometric/block design and used one coat of different colors of acrylic paints in each block.
After they were dry, I used some hot glue to attach the wooden balls to the bottom of the basket, spacing them out
evenly.

And that’s it!

A pretty, functional basket that I can use anywhere for next to nothing.  I was able to use up some scraps and leftover
supplies to make something new, upcycling is not only thrifty it can be a way to bring creative and affordable art into
your home.

And you made it so it’s cool.  I love surrounding myself with things that I or other people have made.  Don’t you think
it just brings such a human connection to our day no matter what we are doing?

I hope you have enjoyed our series so far, and while it’s taking longer than 30 days, if you are anything like me you need
the extra time to gear up for the next idea.

Well, I am off to wipe muddy paws and taxi some wild children to a fro, wishing you a blessed, abundant day full of
creativity and love.
