DIY Knotted Leather Hanging Planter

Do you love to pop into your favorite thrift stores and just see stuff you cannot live without?

(daily, weekly, yearly, if it’s frequent that’s a relief & hopefully will justify how often I go!)

Oh good.

I know, and I feel the same way.

The thrill of the hunt is hard to beat, and while it’s not big game hunting in some remote location,
it’s even better.

No one gets hurt (usually) and we score some sweet stuff and awesome prices.
I have wanted to make something like this for a while.
I have tried to decide if I want to create a macrame plant hanger, or some sort of container out
of leather, and how I could incorporate leather and wood.

Well, those leather scraps I have used to make a couple projects with came in handy, and inspiration
struck when I found a box of wooden bowls at the thrift store for $1.50 recently.
I know right?!

I bought them all, and with a couple of new elements from the sale bin at Jo-Ann’s I was able to
create a couple of new planters that I love, love, love!!

Here is what I used to make them:

  • two wooden bowls
  • natural wood polish to spiff them up if they are faded and need some love
  • scraps of leather cord in different widths and colors
  • scissors
  • two wooden beads or accent pieces to hang from the bottom of each planter
  • pretty plants or succulents to put in your new planters

Both of my bowls were pretty faded, so I used some orange polish on them and their
luster and rich pattern quickly returned.  Next I tied pieces of leather cord together at
the ends until I had two pieces for each planter that were fairly long.

This way I had enough to create a loop at the top to hang, and to tie the leather in a knot
at the bottom which would be the holder for the wood bowl.

Folding two directly in half, I wound another piece of cord around the top of the middle mark
and tied it a couple times.

Next I smoothed out what is now four cords and tied a knot lower down, giving myself a bit of
extra leather at the ends to hang down and look pretty.

Once I was done securing both, I fitted each wood bowl in the leather holder and placed two of
my favorite succulents inside.

I looooooove them so much.

I want to go find a bunch of cool bean bags and get rid of my sectional now.
And buy every wicker thing from the 70’s that I can find (think Three’s Company.)
These goals may take a while so you will probably see my same furniture for a while
until I reach them.

DIY Modern Planter

Well, that is what I made so far this week, along with repainting a GORGEOUS vintage dresser
on casters (she will be for sale soon!) that I am going to have a hard time parting with.
I have heard people say that they began as collectors and ended up selling too because they
needed the room.

That used to sound silly to me, that is until I caught the DIY bug years ago.
Now I know exactly what they were talking about.

Until next time friend, sending huge hugs and love your way, wishing you a blessed and creative day!!
