A little wooden footstool makeover before + after

Hello friend! I hope you had a wonderful Easter, we kept it pretty low key but it gave us a bit more time to work on some things around our home. I would have had this post up a bit sooner but we are coming off of Spring Break week and it was very busy and fun!

I will be sharing the completed Cottage Laundry Room Refresh soon, AND…..I am beyond excited to have butcher block counters going in the kitchen. I will share that soon, while I loved our DIY concrete counters the last 5 years, I was ready for a change. I can’t stop taking pictures of them and they are not even done yet! More on that soon…

I initially picked up this little footstool at the thrift store for 8 dollars intending on using it in the laundry room on the folding counter. I may still, but I got to styling it with some of my favorite cutting boards and vintage rolling pins, and I think this stool would also be great to add some height and dimension on my kitchen counter. Think painted wood riser that can go just about anywhere, and looks great with a candle and small plant, a little collection of teapots, you name it.

So, since our kitchen counters are under construction currently, I set up this vignette in my living room to see if I liked it with kitchen implements around it. I think it works great for this, but it also looks super cute in the laundry room!

Yes, that is my beloved cardstock you see on the top of the stool, it needed a little something and this black and ivory print was sooooo pretty. Who can resist pretty paper?

Or a less than inspiring footstool to paint and breathe new life into?

I could not, so here is my very easy before and after thrifted footstool…the before.

I began by using some leftover paint I had from our bathroom, and mixed in some baking soda so it would adhere nicely to the wood. I did two coats, letting them dry in between and when it was done, ran a fine grit sandpaper block over the edges lightly, and brushed off any dust. This picture below is after just one coat, a 2nd was needed for sure.

Next, I cut out a little cluster of florals from the paper for opposing corners of the top of the stool. Using matte Mod Podge I applied some to the back of each with a foam brush and smoothed the paper out so there were no bubbles. Once that was dry I applied a coat of the matte Mod Podge to the top of the footstool to seal in the design and keep it from chipping.

I am a sucker for a before and after, it is so fun to see something in a new light or thinking of a way to repurpose something to make it beautiful.

Spring is such a wonderful time to clean out closets, sew some pretty pillow covers and prepare our homes for the warm weather to come.

When the garden is in full swing I don’t have as much time to focus on the inside of the house so I relish the time where the seeds are planted, waiting to germinate and I can work on our house.

Working on this little footstool made me think of some of my favorite before and afters, here are just a few to inspire you to paint that chair. Or dresser, or hutch, or, well…you see where I am going.

I have had this little dresser for 10 years, I think it’s on it’s 5th color right now, here she is when I first got her in a pretty green…

And a sweet little drum table makeover in the softest light grey ever….

An old salvaged cabinet from a job site, a great before and after with bonus storage…

One of my favorite projects, a two-toned hutch makeover….

And another shot of the little brown footstool that was in dire need of a pretty makeover…

I hope you have a wonderful, blessed week my friend! Thank you so much for following along and know how much your sweet messages and comments mean to me. This little corner of the blog world would not be here (going on 12 years now!) if it wasn’t for you!

Hugs, xx Tanya
