Black and white DIY Thanksgiving pumpkins

Can you believe that it’s going to be Thanksgiving in just a few weeks?

Neither can I.  We were just knee deep in summer a minute ago it seems, and the wonderful holiday season has already arrived.

Being that it is my favorite time of year I will take it however.  I don’t know about you but I get a little (ok massively) excited when the holiday baking displays begin to pop up at the grocery store.

Marshmallow crème we are ready for you!

But before I get ahead of myself and begin to mentally put up our tree (too late I already have the colors, theme and location in my noggin) we have Thanksgiving to look forward to.

No matter where this Thanksgiving finds us, one thing is for sure, it’s such a good time to stop and really realize how truly blessed we are.

Time to spend with family or friends, or however you want, and food. Good food y’all.

I have had this little blog of mine for about four years now I think.

A lot has happened since then, and returning to work just under two years ago has meant not near as much time to write and share.  But that return to work was necessary as I left an unhealthy life behind and struck out on a new path with my kids.

This Thanksgiving finds me very thankful, for a great career I love, the ability to provide for my family, and a man in my life who supports me and encourages me to do the things that bring me joy.

Looking back I am not sure how we made it, it’s been a rocky path for sure.

But God is good, even in the dark times, and clinging to His promises that He had good in store for us was what kept me going when I felt lonely or hopeless.

This Thanksgiving for me is all about second chances, and doing what necessary to have the life that you want.

With all the laughter and food that brings us all together, full bellies and kids playing around us, we are blessed beyond measure.

Because creating and making are the way I express my love for family and friends, I decided to put together a pretty table that we could all gather around as we counted our blessings this year.

We refinished an old oak table this year and put long dark planks of pine on the top to give us a farmhouse feel in our dining room.

The chairs were all repainted with white chalk paint, and covered with a grey patterned fabric (and Scotchguarded beyond belief!)

I wanted our table to be clean, warm and inviting and not take away from the food and festivities.  I immediately thought how fun it would be to use a black and white theme this year.

 curly wigs

That’s where these easy fabric covered pumpkins came into play.

Here is how I made them:

I used three Styrofoam Dollar Tree) pumpkins, one for the small pumpkin and two stacked on top of each other for the larger one.

I cut out the little stems and placed each in the center of a square of fabric (before I cut the squares I pulled each up to measure and make sure they would cover and tuck in the new hole where the stem was previously.)

I worked my way around each just tucking and gluing, like wrapping an odd shaped gift! Once I was done I took a long slender triangle of thin scrapbooking cardboard and made each stem by securing them with hot glue then gluing them in place as the new stem.  Next I cut out and added with a bit of hot glue a couple leaves, and a moss green pipe cleaner to each as a little curly vine.

And I love them SO much, they took less than 30 minutes and I keep moving them all over, I hope they make it back to the table in time for Thanksgiving!

  1. Very cute idea………and bet they look great with your decor.
I have used gold napkins to cover a roll of bathroom tissue then just stuck a stick in the top
for a stem……….altho they weren’t as round they actually looked pretty cute. Like the idea
of using a cheap pumpkin better, as the look more rounded, course you can always add
some fiber fill to the bathroom tissue roll too.. lol
Thanks for sharing your cute pumpkins.
    Blessings, Nellie

  7. Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a

said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She
