Candy Cane Canning Jar Ring Wreath

Bayberry Candles, old-fashioned hard candies, fruitcake, Shiny-Brite’s galore, and
enough tinsel to cover a dozen trees was the stuff that a kid from the 70’s remembers
at Christmastime.

Moon boots, feathered hair, and rainbows covering everything offered many
options for a roller-skating, Bonnie-Bell wearing, Love’s Baby Soft smelling tween.
Once the perfect outfit had been selected, tree shopping could begin.

Everyone on the block had a ginormous wood paneled station wagon that got about 4 mpg.
Every family would load up and head out in search of the perfect tree.  Once the perfect
tree had been found we returned filled with glee as the ornaments were retrieved from
the basement.

Christmastime had officially begun.

We never had an excess of funds available at Christmas, but you never would have
known.  My Grandma Edith would roast a huge turkey, make her famous ambrosia,
and slip away into the kitchen to make the best divinity you have ever laid eyes on.

This is no batch of divinity, but it’s my take on the fabulous canning jar ring wreaths
we have been seeing around blogsphere for a while now.  Also perfect for your wedding and fit your prom dress.
I tried incorporating green
or red and white ribbon, gingham, and burlap but nothing looked better than leaving
this little wreath au naturual.

Here is what I did…

I had quite a few rings that were already white so that saved a step.  Otherwise, they can
be spray painted bright white.  The remaining rings I spray painted red, and allowed them
to dry well overnight before I used a bit of fine sandpaper to shabby them up a bit.

And the rest is super easy, paint, string, hang.
You could get down with your bad self and add some bling, washi tape, ornaments,
or just keep it simple like mine.

Have you begun working on Christmas preparations yet, or perhaps still recovering
from Halloween?

  1. What a cute post! Let's see, you must be about 44? My age!! I had all the same things going on in my youth. I LOVE this project and definitely am making one for my home. Featuring tomorrow at Redoux. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Child from the 70's here myself. Love the red and white color choice, it really stands out. Stopping by from the Junkers United Christmas link party. Your wreath is pretty groovy !! Amy from StowandTellU

  3. Tanya! I love this! Such a cool non-traditional wreath! Thanks so much for sharing at Get Your DIY On! I hope to see you tomorrow at 7 pm EST to link up your ornament tutorials! Have a great weekend!

  4. For some reason, I pictured the wreath bigger… Mine turned out rather small. It is only 8 inches in diameter. Not what I had hoped for. Definitely too small for my front door. When I came back to look at your site, I noticed the final product against a fence…. which I should have noticed before. I think it would be nice if your wreath instructions had the final products dimensions listed. 🙂 Plus, you said “18 or more canning jar lids” and I can only imagine how tiny that would be because I used over 30 lids and it STILL was small.
Then, I found it was quite difficult to get the canning lids to look like a wreath. Your instructions said that it was “super easy.” Well guess what, it isn’t super easy to everyone. 🙂 After a long time, I gave up trying to shape it like a circle. My husband and I were trying to figure out what we were going to do with 30+ red and white canning jar lids when some neighbors came over. With my frustration that it was way smaller than I expected and after all the work it was (I primed each lid, spray each lid, then I chose to clear coat each lid), I was ready to throw it across the room. I held up my finished ‘product’ and laughingly said, “Look at my Pintrest fail!” We all had a good laugh. His wife suggested using the lids on mason jars that have treats in them. I thought that was probably the only use I was going to get out of these circles of disappointment – I sure as heck couldn’t get them to look like a wreath and there is no way I could use them for canning now. While we were talking, her husband started messing with it and after a while he was able to finagle it to look like a circle. So my LITTLE wreath is hanging on my wall instead of my front door. It is super cute but not was I was hoping for…. back to the drawing board.

    1. Hi Celeste,

I am so sorry to hear how frustrating this project was for you 🙁 Even as a professional crafter and blogger I have a whole bunch of craft fails, including more than a few wreaths! I recently dropped my favorite pair of plaster antlers about 8 feet when I was dusting them and ended up hot gluing them back together (yay hot glue it always saves the day) but you can see the lines and am just going to rock my hot glued antlers for now 🙂

I wish you the best in your crafty adventures, keep on creating & have a joyous Holiday Season- xoxo

  5. Oh my goodness! Incredible article dude! Thank you so much, However I am going through problems with your
RSS. I don’t know the reason why I cannot subscribe to
it. Is there anyone else getting identical RSS issues?
Anyone that knows the solution can you kindly respond?
    Thanx!!
