Candy Corn Rice Krispie Treats

I suppose that making Halloween treats on top of the plethora of candy most of us have
around Halloween could be considered too much.
But not if you love candy corn.

Candy corn was initially created by a gentleman by the name of George Renninger, who in

the 1880’s was a candy maker at the Wunderlee Candy Company in Philadelphia.  It was then
purchased and distributed by Goelitz Confectionery Company, and the company that we know
today as Jelly Belly has the longest noted history making our favorite Fall candy.
The way they make candy corn over the years has changed, but the original recipe combining
sugar, vanilla, fondant, and mallow creme is the same today as it was back then.  Source for
this data can be found here.
Now that you know more than you ever thought you wanted to know about candy corn,
let’s make something yummy.  Here is how I make:
Candy Corn Rice Krispie Treats
makes a 13″ x 9″ pan of treats
2 T. butter
6 cups of mini marshmallows
6 cups of Rice Krispie Cereal
1 t. vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups of candy corn
1 cup of vanilla frosting
orange food coloring or red and yellow food coloring
Set aside about 16 candy corn pieces to top your treats with before you begin.
Start by melting your butter over medium heat in a deep pan on the stove.  Once
your butter is melted, stir in your marshmallows and mix with butter until melted.
removed your pan from the stove top, stir in vanilla, then cereal, until blended.
Fold in about one cup of chopped candy corn and spread into greased pan with
a buttered spatula.  Set aside to cool.
In a small bowl combine frosting with enough food coloring to achieve your
desired color of orange.  I like to cut my krispies into about 16 or so squares,
then frost them and add the candy accent once they have already been cut and
separated.
Enjoy!
Thank you so much for baking with me today!
