Do you ever have one of those years that you want to change like everything about your Christmas decor?
I have surveyed what we have, and the good news I think I can get my tree to be fabulous for another year.
That is with a few zip ties and possibly a couple pounds of hot glue.
But we are going to cover that baby in ornaments and lights, and hope for the best!
I have priced out the tree I want and part of me says… “you should get that, you need it”
and the more thrifty, rational side counters, “you are a DIY home blogger, um.. fix the stinking tree already!”
Well, the savings couldn’t be squandered so, I have been checking Goodwill a couple times a week,
and hit Michael’s last week with some sa-weet sales going on. Throw in some Dollar Tree finds and
I think I will be able to pull off a whole new look this year without spending a lot.
Here is how I made this pretty, sparkly wreath from paper, pine cones and a few other easy to find items…
Supplies:
- One wreath base, I used a 16″ base
- Light olive green 12″ x 12″ craft paper, cut into leaf shapes
- Book pages cut into leaf shapes
- Mod Podge
- Craft Brush
- White glitter
- Hot Glue & glue gun
- Scissors
- Pine cone and berry picks from your local craft store
- 2-3 yards of accent ribbon
Directions:
After I cut out all of my leaf shapes, I folded all of them lengthwise in half so it would give them some fluff and depth
when they were glued around the wreath base. Work your way around gluing each leaf down, then when it is nice and
full, by a small area at a time apply some Mod Podge to the outside of the leaf edge and shake a little glitter over the area.
Once you are done with that, use your hot glue gun to attach berries and pine cones here and there around the wreath.
Next, make a bow with a shot piece of ribbon, then with another long piece fold it in half and tack it down with glue to
the top center of the wreath. Glue your bow in the front and you are done!
Here is what I have come up with so far:
- a bunch of red ornaments in different styles, some with glitter, some just in their shiny glory all about $2 for a big box
- Fabric that is WAY different than my theme/color/style from previous years. Think black, white and red!
I can’t wait to show you the after of these little Christmas houses from Dollar Tree, crazy!
- A few digs in the garage scored me a huge basket the tree can stand in (we have to puppy proof this year, yes there is a puppy in the house and I probably am crazy.
- The white lights all appear to be in good working order (switching from colors to white this year, pray the family does not stage a riot
- A whole bunch of ideas on Pinterest, if you are following me (twelveOeight) on Pinterest yet? Oh I hope you are, I love Pinterest so much it is just fun. To connect to my boards and follow me (pretty please, say you will?) click on the images…
and one of my favorites right now, a board for Christmas ideas & inspiration…
There will be a lot of work to change out just about everything for this year color-wise, and the boys are still asking when
they are to receive a bedroom makeover. Um, soon.
I promise.
In the meantime there is a tree skirt to make or find, more ornaments needed, I can’t wait to share my upcycled vintage-ish
Advent Calendar too. All in the weeks to come, I snap the photos and share each as I finish it!
What do you do when your tastes seem to change and you want new everything?
I accept support, ideas and encouragement of all kinds, this is going to be a challenge!
Thank you so much for reading friend, I love to hear what you think about this space and any ideas you have.

Oh my goodness, thank you Leslie!!! xoxo
When inexpensive/found/thrifted supplies are the main “ingredients” of a project, makes the whole thing that much more exciting. Off to pin!

Yay!! Thank you SO much Trisha!! xoxo
Love your wreath. What kind of base did you use?? Foam or the wood kind??
Hi Maggie,
I just emailed you directly too in case you don’t see my response. I used a willow wreath form, you can sometimes find them at your local dollar store. But if you have any other type of wreath base they all work well for this type of wreath 🙂 Happy crafting! xoxo
ohhhh Tanya, I love this! The book pages and the glitter dipped paper is the perfect combo! Beautiful!
Hi Chelsea! It was so fun to make, I love the paper and glitter too. Well, glitter plus anything is good haha! Thank you again – xoxo
Love this wreath, hope I’ll have time to make it, will be making lots of items for a craft show on 12/13 so will be pretty busy. (that’s if I can get hubs to cut out some things for me)
Your wreath is so pretty with the book page leaves and green leaves. I have bunch of holly leaves I cut out last year so might substitute them or your style leaves. That way might have time to make the wreath. Will sprinkle some glitter on them.
Happy days and enjoy the season. From all the blogs I’ve been on this week looks like many people are getting in mood. Supposed to be 16 tonight here and high was 37 today. That sure helps me get in mood.
Hi JaneEllen,
Thank you for visiting! A wreath with holly mixed in would be beautiful 🙂 Best of luck with your craft show and stay warm, 16 is chilly!!
xoxo
