Distressed Black Dresser before + after

As you know I am head over heels in love with painting furniture.

And my little green WWI era dresser has been in a few pictures over the past few years.

I loved bringing it home (originally $35) and deciding what to paint it.

I decided on a pretty Granny Smith Apple green a few years ago and never looked back.

Here she is this past Christmas in my home office.

She has held Legos, Barbie’s, comic books, and more than a few fidget spinners and McDonald’s toys that accompany a kids meal.

But, she kept speaking to me and asking me for something different.

Something fresh and way off the beaten path from my usual colors for furniture.

And I can’t tell you how very much I love her, and the best part.

Her green former life peeks thru here and there.

I feel like I have the best both worlds now!

I began by using black chalk paint, and painted two good coats over the entire piece.

I swapped out the hardware but what I had was kind of a dark bronze from some cabinets on a remodel Troy did.  We never throw out hardware, ever.  So we already had that.

We painted the knobs silver, then used a bit of laquer thinner and dabbed it on each knob until they looked faded and old.

My favorite.

I used steel wool all over the piece wherever I had painted, and a super fine sandpaper lightly on a few edges to give her a few nicely loved edges.

On came the knobs, and she was done.

The paint I used dried very fast, and I was all done in about 2 hours!

A nice coat of Howard’s Feed N’ Shine and she was happy as a vintage black dresser could be.

You may notice that I take a lot of my photos in the same spot.  It’s in front of a gate in our yard, and has the best light ever.

Especially during the winter months here in the Pacific North West, it can get pretty dark.

When I see a break in the clouds/rain you can find me dragging my latest project outside to take a picture of it!

She resides in our Master Bedroom, for now at least.  I have a tendency to move furniture around a lot.

Do you do the same thing? Move, re-purpose, move it again, maybe paint it one or ten times, and find you love it more and more with each new makeover and purpose?

Perhaps there is a name for this, for now I just think of it as seeing the hope and good in a sturdy piece of furniture that has a little of a history.

And more life to be lived!

Thank you so much for reading, and as always, may your heart and home be full of everything you love…

  1. I love it! I love the green and I love it in black with the green peeking thru. Thank you for all the info on how you did your project. I love painted furniture. Hugs,

  2. It turned out so lovely Tanya. Some pieces are definitely worth keeping forever and a little bit of paint and creativity goes a long way to make them look amazing throughout the years.
