What’s better than burlap? The only thing I can think of are no-sew burlap projects! Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy sewing, but my love affair with my hot glue gun gets downright crazy around the holidays. I have tables, tablescaping, and table settings on the brain so forgive me if I ramble on about everything table for a couple weeks?
Thanksgiving is such a fun time to cook delicious foods, spend time with our loved ones, and break out our very best when setting out table. I wanted something kind of rustic for our dining room table this year, with a pop of color. My dining room table is maple, and my whack-a-doo chairs are all black. So I am really digging this combo with burlap and mustard. Y’all ready?
A table runner is super easy to put together and I think it will go well with the place card/utensil holders that I just made, check them out

I measured my table and added about 12″ to that measurement, since I wanted the runner to hang over each end. I already had a few yards of burlap fabric on hand I didn’t even need to run to the fabric store. Not that I would have minded, but I am trying to go less frequently and plan my projects ahead. Next I measured out about 16 1/2″ for the width of the runner and cut the burlap to meet these dimensions.
One side still had a perfectly good burlappy (it’s a real word) selvage edge so I only had to “hem” one side.
Next I folded under and lightly pressed a 1/2″ fold along the side of the burlap that I cut to make a hem using my iron on it’s high setting with steam. Using my hi-temp glue gun I made a very thin line of glue and pressed it down to create a sealed hem. I usually cover my kitchen island with a big piece of freezer paper when crafting. It’s super easy clean up and I can save it from damage, crafting is a rough sport, this is not for the timid.
After the runner was done I used about 1/3 yard of pretty mustard fabric that I have had for a while. I cut it in 2″ and 3″ strips, and frayed the edges by pulling on them and removing a couple strings from each side. The fastest way to do this is the rip the fabric strips, it also is an excellent way to release stress. This time of year, we all may be ripping some fabric strips to make roses!
I folded each strip in half as in the picture above, turned the end of each into the “center” of the rose by twisting, rolling, and creating a circle of twisted shabby fabric. The shabbier (also a real word I am sure this time) the better. Once each of the roses were done, I attached them to each end of the runner with a dab of hot glue in opposite corners. And voila! a new, burlappy, table runner that I did not have to sew and used a few supplies I already had on hand.
I can smell the sweet potatoes now, I know it’s only November 1st but I just cannot get my mind of that turkey. And cranberry chutney. And cheesecake…and…
