DIY concrete candle holders

how to make cement candle holders

We have had such a fun & busy week around here, I am finally getting a chance to share a couple
new things with you.  I am LOVING all of the fun home accessories, tables, stools, and just about
anything you can think of made out of concrete that’s all over right now.

But first, I wanted to share another update, and that is my weight loss.
It’s been six months since I began this journey, and I have lost 40 pounds so far.
I know right? I’m excited too.  And I have a ways to go on my journey to fitness and better health
in my 40’s.  Feeling good feels good, does that make sense?

And, I wanted an updated photo for my blog, and social media for a while now, but really wanted
to wait until I had reached some of my weight loss goals.

The first was to feel better, and I feel A LOT better than I did earlier this year.
The second was to reach a midway point that I feel good enough about my appearance
that I am ready to get in front of the camera (instead of always behind it in ripped jeans
and a pony tail!)  and have some fun.  My wonderful friend Koren with Kaptured by Koren
photography blessed us with her talent and skill for an evening in our yard.  I love her style,
and how amazing she is at putting her nervous subject at ease.

So here is my new photo, there are others too, one of them in particular I think you will find
as funny as I do, this will be saved for an upcoming craft fail/decorating challenge part of
twelveOeight.  Ok, let’s make some Concrete Candle Holders…

Here is what I used to used to make my own concrete candle holders:

  • One package of quick-setting concrete mix (I found mine at Home Depot)
  • Mixing bowl & spoon
  • Water
  • Molds for concrete mix
  • Votives in plastic holders
  • Tape, paint brushes
  • Acrylic craft paints (I used gold and white)

This quick drying concrete mix sets fast, so you will want to have all of your supplies ready to go.
I used about 2/3 of the box to make these two candle holders.  Following the instructions, I mixed
the concrete mix and cold water (outside as it’s recommended to not breathe it in) and poured the
mixture into the two molds I decided to use.  I didn’t use anything to coat the inside of the molds
as each of them were easy to tear or trim away from the concrete when it was dry.

Once you pour the mix into the mold, you will see bubbles in the mix.  Tapping the mold a few times
will help these bubbles to come to the top.  The next step it to press each votive (with it’s plastic holder)
into the top of the concrete, then smooth out the top with your fingers or a disposable spoon.

I let them dry outside on a warm day, and they were set very quickly.  Later in the day, I removed the
molds, and used tape to create the design on the outside of each candle holder.  Using a craft brush I
applied two coats of acrylic paint and allowed it to dry after removing the tape.

They were really easy to make, and you know what?
They are kind of heavy, so my kids don’t fiddle around with them, brilliant!!
I have them on our dining room table with this Paper Succulent I made recently, and after all of the
littles have fallen asleep, I love to light them and watch them make the whole room glow.
