DIY faux cowhide rug

Hello lovies, happy weekend!
I am so super duper over the moon excited about today’s project,
it’s been something I have wanted to make for a long time.

And it made me think a lot about the evolution of our decorating style, and how it changes over time.

I took one of those online decorating-style personality-type-tests online a while ago
and discovered what I pretty much already knew.  My style was labeled boho-modern
I believe, which basically seems to be a mish-mash of vintage, modern, yard-sale-chic,
a few Navajo rugs, and some big, bright pillows piled up everywhere.

While I continue to work on Abbie’s room, the process is taking longer than this
impatient DIY-er would like.  But that usually means it’s evolving at the same time,
so I must slow down a bit and just let it happen.

Plus I keep getting sidetracked, in a good way, but ideas and DIY projects that are
swimming around in my head waiting for bedtime to happen so mom can bust out
the supplies.  I have been drooling over so many gorgeous cowhides recently,
Pinning and dreaming, hoping and wondering how I can get my hands on one for
myself.

Well, I can either use my entire decorating budget for the remainder of 2014 on
one piece, or, like we always do, find a way to make my own.

I was hugely bummed after a full on fail earlier this week with a kelly green
makeover on my tv console.  It was BAD.

Probably due to the humidity this week, and painting outside.

It will get a good sanding and a redo hopefully sometime in August.
For now I have a pile of cords and a DVD player sitting on a dining room
chair.

Yep, it looks super hot.

Anyways, on with the cowhide rug that I want.
As I cleaned and organized my supplies and fabric recently I found a
huge piece of canvas that I have been kind of waiting to use.
I thought about stretching it over a frame and doing a little painting,
but what I really wanted was a big statement piece I could use on a wall
or under a table, etc…

Here is what I used to make my DIY faux cowhide rug, I am so excited it
turned out exactly how I wanted it to!

supplies:

  •  two cards of natural canvas
  • pencil & sharp scissors
  • assorted paint brushes
  • light, medium, dark brown & gold acrylic paints
  • Poly sealer (spray works best) if using on the floor to protect from dirt

directions:

Begin by folding canvas lengthwise and drawing the cowhide outline along one side, and cut
around the outer edge to create an even pattern on both sides when unfolded.  There really is
no pattern, or right/wrong way to do this.  A natural hide would not be perfect or absolutely
even on both sides.  so a freehand pattern will help it look more natural.

Open your canvas up, and begin by applying some of your lighter brown along the center and
sides of the hide, allow the paint to dry a bit, then dab on areas of darker and medium brown
sections, then a little gold in a few areas last.

There really is no right or wrong way to apply the paint, just go with your instincts and have
fun.  It’s your fabulous cowhide after all, and you want to LOVE it so make it your own.
While we are not vegan, I do feel better about not spending a ton on a natural cowhide,
in addition to this being a cruelty-free project.  That’s a bonus.

I had the most difficult time deciding if this should be a zebra print with blingy gold stripes or a
cowhide.  I settled on a cowhide, but visions of gold zebras (faux of course) keep dancing thru my
head.  Off to paint some more…

Have a fabulous, creative day!!
