DIY Frosted Paper Magnolia Wreath

I love wreaths.

And I didn’t realize how many I had (similar to the shock when you survey how many craft supplies you have amassed or what your hoard of furniture to paint looks like) until we moved this year.

Knowing that I could make more, and some of them had been stored haphazardly with skate boards leaned against them and a Barbie dream house crowding them out in our garage, I let some of them go.

It was really freeing, and yes I have a couple things looking back thru the exhaustion of the move and unpacking that I kick myself for getting rid of.

But, alas, armed with a glue gun, some paper and a few other supplies, I was able to replenish my wreath hoard this weekend.

I kept thinking about a magnolia wreath, and I knew I wanted to use this kraft paper cardstock I picked up when it was on sale.

So this is the version of a DIY Magnolia Wreath that I came up with.

So why not make a magnolia wreath out of paper leaves, and add a little glitter.

Or a lot.

Or so much that our feet and the dogs paws are covered in it.

Reminding me that it’s time to sweep, but not until I am done telling you about this frosted-gingerbread-ey wreath.

Here is what I used:

  • Wood embroidery hoop (I used a 12″ hoop)
  • Hot glue
  • Kraft paper cardstock (I used about 8 sheets as I got about 4 big leaves from each sheet.  You may need more or less depending on how large you make yours)
  • Scissors
  • Matte poly sealer like Martha Stewart’s or Mod Podge
  • Foam brush
  • Glitter- I used white but gold or iridescent would be so pretty too!
  • Wine.  Because all crafting is better with a bit of wine.

I began by folding all of my paper in half lengthwise first then each half again lengthwise.  This created the folds I needed and I was able to get four good size leaves from each sheet.

After I trimmed and shaped the leaves to make sure there were no sharp edges, I glued them alternating the direction all around the edges of the wreath, then a few on the back to make it fluffy.

Once all the leaves were in place I covered my counter in paper and used my brush dabbed in a bit of poly sealer and in three or four leaf intervals brushed on the sealer then sprinted the glitter on the leaves.

When the glitter and sealer were all set and no longer wet I went back and folded the leaves in half once more to make them come off the base a bit more.

A bit of twine or ribbon to tie to the back to hang if you would like, and you my friend have a pretty new wreath.

No sporting equipment or Barbie dream houses near the wreaths from now on just in case…

I will be storing her up high, but first I am going to enjoy each sparkly, pretty leaf all Christmas season.

And, maybe even a bit after that, I feel like this is perfect for Winter and not too Christmas-ey don’t you?

Hugs from my home to yours today,

xoxo
