DIY Home Decor On A Budget: Chic Glass Vase

Most of us who are frugal refer to ourselves as being cheap, however frugality does not mean that we do not like to shop, spend, or even splurge.  I believe (and this is just my opinion I could be terribly wrong) that the difference lies in value.  Value is placed on things that are important to us.  I like the best value for the least amount of money (otherwise known as a smokin’ good deal) but I don’t think I am cheap.

Frugal folks see value in finding a great pair of jeans that still have a lot of wear in them for $4, or a hideous table that just needs a little love, sandpaper and spray paint.  Perhaps a burlap runner, and a basket too, just a suggestion.  If you are truly cheap you are a bottom line person and probably don’t spend as many years of your life at yard sales like your frugal counterparts.  And you probably have a little more room in your garage.

I just freed up a bit of space in my garage when I came across this jar that I found at a thrift store earlier this summer.  I knew I wanted to turn it into something pretty, and I have already wrapped sisal and twine around enough things that I believe my children fear they are next.

I did a little experimenting with glue, super glue is the best option for glass.  Frosted glass adheres one million times better to a jar than non frosted glass.  So here is how I made this upycled vase for my kitchen:

What you need:
  • A jar or glass vase from the Dollar Store would also work great
  • Frosted glass vase filler gems, I used a mix of clear and light blue from WalMart
  • Super glue
Directions:

Make sure your jar or vase is clean and dry, and in a well ventilated area begin at the top by placing a small dot of super glue on the back of your glass gem.  Hold it in place for a moment, and move onto the next spot creating an irregular pattern down towards the bottom of the vase.

I tested this vase out and tried to pry one of these glass beads off of the side and it would not budge.  My kids will think these look like candy so I need to test these things to avoid drama and the need to check diapers for ingested pennies, etc…

Fill your super chic new vase with flowers and enjoy how beautiful it looks, especially in a sunny window.  My kitchen has a sunny corner window above the sink so I have found the perfect spot for my new creation.

Not that you need my suggestions (however I do think that the toddler-eating test above was probably helpful) but wouldn’t these make awesome Christmas gifts on a budget? Or, beautiful DIY wedding centerpieces too.  What about using a really big jar and making a pretty Autumn lantern for your dining table with amber gems? Oh the glass we could recycle…

Hope this finds you with a craft drawer full of supplies and some cheap frugal friends who think you are a genius for being so thrifty and creative.  Thank you so much for creating with me today.

Hugs & Blessings to you 🙂
xoxo, Tanya
