DIY Leather Dream Catcher

How To Make A Dream Catcher #diy #dreamcatcher #diywallart #modern #twelveOeightblog

Hello friends!

The last few days have gone by so fast I can’t believe it.
I hope you have enjoyed time with family and friends, and are having a wonderful holiday season.
Ours began with a ton of excitement and a long list of projects to complete.

When I picked the kids up from school on their last day before Christmas break, the two weeks in front of us seemed
like they would last forever and everything would get done.
Well not really, while there are still quite a few things on my stuff-I-want-to-do-list, we did accomplish quite a bit.

I am almost done with my boys shared bedroom makeover, and I cannot wait to share it with you!
I just have to install the shelving, then it’s reveal time.  Coming soon…

And, I claimed some found space in our playroom that is above our garage.  By moving the furniture around,
bringing in my work table and doing a little painting, I was able to create a large studio area that is well lit and
all of my supplies are right there.

Not in the laundry room, or the garage.

But right there.  I am loving it, and this project was the first one that I created in my new space the very first night
it was ready.  I will be sharing this space soon, I have some curtains to hang and a few accessories to finish.
Eek, I love it so!!

That brings us to today’s DIY.  I love to mix different textures and patterns to bring a sense of depth and feel to
each space in my home.  A couch needs the right pillows that make me happy, a table needs a pretty lamp and
some cool books.  And leather crafts can be just the right thing to bring this kind of softness and warmth into
our spaces, and they don’t have to be hard to make either!

I love Native American art, Mexican blankets and ponchos, baskets and flowers, and dream catchers.
It all comes together in a mix of vintage, modern, and eclectic that makes me happy and feel like I am home.
I cannot describe my style any other way than a mix of stuff I enjoy, and things that inspire me.

The inspiration behind this Leather Dream Catcher was a mix of dark and light leather which made me think
of the struggles and joys we have in our lives.  The circle in the center is that of hope and opportunity, and the
feathers at the bottom are white.  I wanted to use all white feathers because they made me think of a clean slate,
forgiveness, and a new day each day to live.

Here is what I used to make my DIY Leather Dream Catcher:

Supplies:

  • Two gold-toned rings (I found mine at JoAnn’s and used a           )
  • Assorted leather trim and cord, sometimes available in a bag of scrap leather for under $10 (mine was $6 at JoAnn’s)
  • Hot glue gun & hot glue
  • Feathers
  • Scissors

Directions:

I began by choosing a variety of widths and colors of leather for the dream catcher, and one side at a time tied a strip of
leather to the center ring, and outer ring.  I wanted to place the inner ting off center, so I worked my way around tying on
one side, then the other to balance each out.  The thinner pieces of cord I tied on each end, then used a bit of hot glue to
secure each end.  For the pieces that were wider, I folded them under and secured each end with hot glue.

For the bottom portion of the dream catcher I used long pieces (about a yard each or a little less) doubled and tied the cord,
then added five feathers randomly at the bottom of the leather, and trimmed excess pieces that were too long.
The last step was to create a hanger with a piece of leather cord about 12″ long, and voila!
