DIY Magnetic Tray, Burlap Rose Magnets, and some Ryan Gosling

It’s hard to think about getting ready for back-to-school days again, but they are approaching faster than we realize! Even though we home school, getting organized and stocking up is deeply ingrained and just part of my routine, it keeps me sane, or close to it.  I am not super-organized but I do like to know where things are, and have a place where my kiddos can post notes and reminders of things they need, why not make it beautiful?  I recently finished a Chalkboard Memo Board  for my office, but I really needed something bright and fun for our kitchen.  Well, this is bright, and it was really fun to make, not to mention easy, which means that if I can do it, you can too.  Let’s get going!

What you need:

  • Krylon Sun Yellow Spray Paint (gloss or satin is great-and get crazy with the color!)
  • Krylon Spray Paint Primer
  • 1/2 yard of co-ordinating fabric and ribbon/ric-rac for your chevron bunting
  • 1/2 yard of burlap
  • Hot glue, magnetic strips, scissors, miscellaneous pieces of chipboard for rose base, pinking shears,
  • And, the item you want to turn into a magnetic message board.  Cookie sheet, Dollar Tree Serving tray, anything magnets will stick to!

I chose to use a Dollar Tree tray I had on hand from a party, and used two coats of spray paint primer before painting with two coats of yellow spray paint.  I set the tray aside to dry well while I made my chevron bunting and burlap rosettes.  I cut the fabric into long triangles, and using my pinking shears, trimmed the two long edges like in picture 2 above.  I made ten of them, and overlapped them slightly, hot-gluing a piece of ric-rac along the top of the underside of the triangles as in picture 5.  I made a slight loop on each end so I would be able to hang it up, and set it aside.

While I was cutting my fabric, I also cut out three 18″ strips of burlap about 1″ wide, and six leaves about 2″ long as well, see pictures 4 and 6.  I rolled each piece of burlap and using hot-glue attached one end to a round piece of chipboard (see picture 8) then rolling and turning the chipboard gluing the burlap roll into place, formed three rosettes (see picture 9).  I turned each over and hot-glued a magnetic strip and two leaves to the back of each rosette and allowed them to cool before trying them out.  In picture 1 you can see how cute my son’s most recent painting looks alongside some pages torn out of my most recent IKEA catalog.  A girl must dream.

I used one more piece of scrap burlap and glued the ends to the back of the tray to form a hanger for it, and I was done in less than an hour!

If I have learned one thing from spending countless hours on Pinterest it is that I can have an organized home that is also fun and a bit crazy too.  I have also learned that there very well may be no end to the Ryan Gosling “Hey Girl” pictures, and I am ok with that as well.  Ryan, thank you for providing us with an unending list of reasons to adore you.
You’re welcome 😉
xoxo, Tanya

What a fun pop of colour for your kitchen, Tanya! I've debated buying this same spray paint colour several times.

Lovely little surprise at the end of your post, too 😉

Love the color of your magnet board. I'm thinking I might make one of these to actually hang on my fridge and help corral some of the random scraps and bits of daily life that are all over it! Great idea.
