I love to pour over all of the gorgeous catalogs from
Ballard Designs, One Kings Lane, and Pottery Barn,
for decorating ideas and inspiration.
But, the price tag that goes with all of the drool-worthy
pretties is usually more than I would want to pay.
I am fairly thrifty but will splurge
on a classic item that is high quality.
I know I am not alone when I say that my style
and tastes have changed and continue to over time.
Do you see that yours has changed and continues to?
Do you often look back and
wonder if you will every be “done” decorating?
I don’t think I would ever want to be done. My home
is my refuge and nest. And my hobby, passion,
and place I am most happy. Working on it
brings me so much joy.
I found the rug below on One Kings Lane site recently,
and while my version is not “exactly” the same, I am enjoying it.
I wanted to make another one of my thrifty
Dollar Tree doormats for my back porch.
I couldn’t decide if I wanted to stencil a brocade design,
or use large stripes. So the mat sat in my
craft room for months.
Then I found this irregular chevron pattern
and I really liked the color combination.
I gathered up some pouncer brushes, masking tape,
a few different colors of acrylic paint and taped out my design.
I have not had an issue with my paint fading on the last
rug I painted, as acrylic paint is very hard to remove once
it sets from just about any porous surface.
I used about three layers
of paint on each section. And let it dry overnight before I
removed the tape. Once I did I was really pleased with the
complimentary contrast between the mustard and greys. I used
less white than the “original” rug, but since this would be
going by my back door, and we are in the rainy Pacific Northwest
I used more gray and mustard to hide dirt.
And mud, cookie crumbs, crayon marks…
These clean up easily with a good sweeping,
and the kids liked it too.
I have quite a few pictures with hands, toes,
and faces photo-bombing my photography efforts.
But I know I have their approval when they begin
standing on, jumping on,
and taking ownership of something I make.
So, it’s toddler approved as well,
which makes it perfect for my house!
See you tonight for the Pretty Thing Link Party!
The party begins every Monday at 5pm PST.
I cannot wait to see what you have been working on!!

Love this rug!
Very Cute! I recently tried painting a rug with paint markers, and even tho the rug was a low level loop, I still couldn't get enough paint to show up very well, and in the process I destroyed the marker tips… your process is much better! Little Bit from http://www.DecorateWithaLittleBit.com
Tanya, Looks fabulous! Love your chevron rug. I am also in the rainy Pacific Northwest. Cheers!

Love this idea! I'm in desperate need to update my sunroom..this would be perfect! Thanks for the great tutorial and idea!
I really love how it turned out. Do you have a trick to how you got your tape and zigs so perfect? I wonder if Dollar Tree still has those mats?
What a great update to your rug! You did a great job. Thanks for sharing it at my Twirl & Take a Bow party! Have a great week.

Love it!! I been wanting to make one myself but am curious about the texture. Is the rug still soft after you paint it or does it feel like it has been painted?
New follower here – I love the varying widths of the pattern and the colors!
Hi Tanya, I saw this linked up at the 36th ave, and how simple! I am loving chevron.

Hi Tanya – I had to jump over from Mod Vintage Life to see your great chevron rug. Thanks for the tutorial. I have a Target rug that has been sitting in my laundry room for a couple of months as i've been trying to decide how I want to paint it. Good to know that acrylic is durable and ESPECIALLY in the PacNW! So fun to find a fellow blogger that lives nearby. Hugs to you, Patti@OldThingsNew
