DIY Sisal And Twine Pumpkins

It can be hard to imagine Fall is around the corner when the sun is shining, our BBQ is working
overtime, and iced tea is the beverage of choice.
But as the August heat hits, this is one of my favorite times to get a head start on planning and
creating for my favorite time of year.  I like to find new ways to create out of natural elements
for Fall, and a new way to “make” a pumpkin is a perfect way to kick off my Fall crafting…

Here is what I used to make these super-easy and super-cute Sisal & Twine Pumpkins:

1-2 rolls of sisal rope and jute twine
Mod Podge
Plastic Wrap, tape, containers to wrap rope around as a mold
Scissors, paper plates, paper towels
Twigs or small branches
Burlap and fabric scraps for stem

Directions:

You can use containers like an empty 2 liter soda bottle, or any round/oval tube as a base.
Use 8-12 foot lengths of rope for each pumpkin.
Cover your bottle with plastic wrap, a grocery sack, or a small garbage liner, use tape to secure.
Pour a few tablespoons of Mod Podge onto your paper plate, dip your rope into the Mod Podge
to coat, but not soak the rope.  Wrap each length of rope around a prepared base, tucking each
end in and not overlapping the rope as you wrap it around.  It should look like a coil.
Allow the rope to dry, I set mine out in the sun and they were completely dry in about an hour.
Carefully remove the rope from the base, do not unwind as you want the rope to retain it’s coil
shape.  Connect the ends which creates your pumpkin base, insert branch in the center, and
use jute twine around the center to secure.
Tie scraps of burlap and fabric around the stem to finish your pumpkin!

Aren’t those fun?
Pretty easy too!
Do you like to make a few things early, or wait until the leaves are falling to decorate for Fall
each year? I have done both, and either way, Fall is still my favorite season, I can almost
smell the baked apples now 🙂

  1. I love Mod Modge and projects with rope/twine! Very cute. I agree that it seems odd to think about fall when it's not even August, but once August starts everything just seems like it rushes forward all the way to the end of the year!

  2. Hi Tanya –

First of all, these are so stinkin cute I can't stand it! Second… THANK GOODNESS it's not just me who is already prepping for fall. I'm already in pumpkin mode LOL. Hugs, Holly @ coconutheadsurvivalguide

  3. Bite your tongue. I am over here with my head in the sand, pretending BTS is not around the corner. I have mixed Fall feelings. It's a fav season… but it means my precious, short Oregon Summer is over.

(of course, these are super cute!!!)

  4. Great idea….I love projects that turn out looking fantastic without a lot of work! You've put me in the mood to start crafting for fall!

  5. Very cute idea……
I have to say it is too hot in Florida to even think about Fall….
for me at least. When Sept. gets
here and I decorate then I will do
some things, but nice you are getting a jump on things……lol
    Enjoy it.
    Blessings, Nellie

  6. Okay these are sooo awesome and adorable but it is kinda freaking me out to see pumpkins already… I don't want to see the summer end!! Love them, pinning and sharing on FB Tanya:) Have a great weekend!

  7. I can think about fall all the time because the colors are so rich. Love these pumpkins – they look so great and I think a tablescape would be perfect with them.

  8. Thanks for ones marvelous posting! I certainly enjoyed reading it, you could be a great author.

come back someday. I want to encourage one to continue your great writing, have a nice weekend!
