DIY Stained Wood Shelving Unit {Laundry Room Progress}

Do you ever feel like you could easily renovate and/or decorate your home
if you just had a little more free time and perhaps a bit more in the budget?
Even if we really love DIY projects, (and the thought of a trip to the hardware
store makes us giddy) we all sometimes just want a project to take less than
3 1/2 years to complete.
Seriously, a girl can dream.  But maybe if the options were endless, and money
was no object, I may not complete anything due to sheer sensory overload.
When we do the very best with what we have been blessed with, we seem to
be able to pull off the impossible.  To create something beautiful from humble
ingredients connects us with each, and our roots.
When I repaint a dresser for the 9th time…
Or make a pair of jeans last just a little bit longer…
I feel like my Grandma Edith is right there with me.
I think about the apple crates they sat on instead of kitchen chairs
while they saved their money and bought more land to farm.
And rinsing out a milk carton to use it again.
And the very best way to peel a peach.
While there is no peach tree in my backyard, and it’s been a while
since I saved a milk carton.  Those lessons are never far away.
And I use those gifts, just like you, in many different ways.
So for me, living well with what I have, and painting that dresser
again is not only thrifty, but it’s fun.  And while I would love to
have a few things DONE already around this suburban farmhouse…
there is a joy that comes from getting your hands a little dirty.
Stirring up a little dust, and making a mess.
I didn’t have to stir up much dust to update this organizer
which used to be a wire stand I kept an office printer on.

This organizer is going to be part of my laundry room makeover, and I was
able to try out a Minwax stain I have been wanting to use for a while.

I purchased a wide piece of pine lumber at The Home Depot, and the
Minwax stain in Classic Gray as well.  I had the lumber cut to fit each
shelf of the wire shelving unit I already had at home.  They sell these as
well for less than $20.

I used one good coat of stain on the wood, allowing it to dry well.
I loved the pretty gray color so much, with just enough warm pine
color peeking thru, it was perfect!

In case you missed it, here is the laundry room before…yeah…it’s bad:

My idea board (much better right?!):

So a smaller version of a wire and wood shelving unit is complete, that will fit just
perfect in this space, and hopefully make it a bit less wonky.

  2. This is such a great idea, Tanya! I have a wire shelving unit sitting in my backyard that I use for a greenhouse setup in springtime, and I HATE that my little seedling pots always tip over because the won't sit correctly on the shelves. This is a simple but brilliant solution! Thanks for sharing!
