DIY Sunburst Mirrors, Lego’s & Art

Now I know none of you would do any of the things I am going to reveal, but I have a little confession to make.  I cut corners, my closets are messy.  The garage (hoarding mother ship you already know about) is sketchy.  Sometimes crafting is a messy business.  It’s not all hot glue and wine bottles.  There are tough days, days where I don’t even want to watch HGTV, and I can barely find 5,000 things that I want to make on Pinterest that day.  Some days I don’t use primer, I forget to make it to JoAnn’s to use my coupons.  And I don’t do a very good job cleaning my paintbrushes. I feel better, thank you for not judging…

But it’s those days that you mess around with some glue, a crappy old mirror, and hope that the design you have in your head will transfer itself from your head to your hands.  And it will turn out pretty.  And with a little tweaking, a few adjustments, the right amount of metallic spray paint, and your thought has become art.

That’s what I think happened when I worked on this mirror, it ended up becoming much larger than I planned.  It’s awkward to lift or carry.  And it’s a hot mess when you look at the back with criss crossed lines of glue.  But I like it, and after the paint dried, I hung it above my fireplace and I have not moved it once.  That never happens.

When I hear someone say “I’m not artistic” I try not to correct them, but usually cannot help myself.  Yes you are artistic, you cook, or garden, or sew, or make Popsicle towers with your kids.  If we take a thought, or a feeling, and use our voice, written (or typed!) word, shape clay or yarn, wipe noses and encourage a four year old that their Lego ship is magnificent, we are artists.  We are encourager’s, and I believe this is why many of us become bloggers.  We love to share what is in our hearts and heads, and help each other along the way.

Thank you for helping me along the way, thank you for your kind words, encouragement and reminders that we all need each other and we are all in this together.  And thank you for not turning me in about the whole garage thing.  I really am going to work on it soon.  March is looking good at this point.

Wishing you a blessed, fabulous week, hugs to you 🙂

  1. Oh how so many of my projects I would not want anyone to see the back of too. 🙂 Your work is gorgeous, Tanya. I enjoy seeing what you've been up to and this mirror is beautiful. I love the color. Enjoy your day. Megan

  2. Love this! What is the overall size that it ended up being? I want to make a gigantic round mirror for my living room, and I'm trying to figure out how I want to to do it 🙂 Actually, I tried making one– and it was gorgeous– but it fell off the wall and broke in pieces on top of my husband while he was sitting in the living room! LOL So I have to find a different construction method… 🙂

  3. Keep going Tanya!!! LOVE all your creations!! You should see my basement… it's scary… unfinished, cob-webs and full of stuff I have picked up here and there. Someday I'll get to do everything I wanted to do with those things hehe

    LOVE the mirror!!

  4. I'm definitely a corner-cutter 🙂 As long as it doesn't break and no one can see the back, I usually don't care how messy it is! I really love this mirror, you did a great job!

  5. Love this!!! I've seen ones done with popsicle sticks and they don't have the same affect as what you did! I'm pinning this for later and definitely going to try this:) Thanks for sharing!!!

  6. Looks fabulous! And I totally understand about having messy closets and not using primer. I usually stage pictures on my dining room table, but what no one sees is all the crap I pushed just out of frame or set on the floor temporarily. 🙂 Thanks for sharing at The Fun In Functional!

  7. I like the valuable information you provide in your articles.
I will bookmark your weblog and check again here regularly.
I am quite sure I’ll learn many new stuff right here! Good luck for the next!
