I don’t know about you, but I have the Christmas bug this year. I am having so much fun making presents and decorations. I need to stay away from Dollar Tree and JoAnn’s, or at least set a weekly limit of visits. It’s a good thing the Christmas stuff is buried deep in the garage. Otherwise I think I would have wanted to put up a tree before Halloween. I try to wait until Thanksgiving or the day after. Maybe the day before this year since I will be busy cooking on the day of. I think that is a fair compromise. Anything sooner would be for the blog of course.
When are you decorating this year? Have you started, or do you have a day or weekend that marks the beginning of the season?
If you have some old magazines and a pool noodle, you have the basics for this fun Christmas Wreath. I love gingerbread house colors for Christmas, and originally inspired by a yarn wreath, I decided to make this out of strips of Christmas fabric. I really like how it turned out, and I will tell you a couple secrets that save a lot on this project!
I used a Dollar Store pool noodle donated by fabulous friend Donna (you rock Chica, thank you soooo much I was running out and it’s November!) and after pricing Styrofoam balls at the craft store, dollar store and even Wal Mart I decided I could make them. I found a couple old magazines, a handful of paper grocery sacks, and some Scotch tape, and got to work.
I scrunched up pieces of paper grocery sacks, and magazine pages into a variety of different sizes, securing each with a few pieces of tape as I went. You could also use old gift wrap, plastic grocery sacks, the recycling possibilities are endless. To make the base of the wreath, I pulled the ends of the pool noodle together and connected them with strong painter’s tape. Next I used about one yard of pretty green cotton fabric, tearing it into 5 inch strips, I wrapped each around the noodle until it was covered. I used a dot of hot glue to secure the ends of each strip. To this I added a lighter color green ric-rac, wrapping it around the fabric covered base and attached the ends.
Next I used about five different types of Christmas fabrics torn in 1 to 1 1/2 inch wide strips (a great way to use left over fabric odds and ends from past projects) and using a dot of hot glue on the end of the first strip, just wound them around each ball, gluing the ends down, and saving a piece to tie around each in a knot. I then trimmed the edges and frayed them slightly by pulling on them.
When I had enough fabric covered balls made. I glued them to the wreath in a zig-zag pattern, knowing that I wanted to alternate them with the other little dollar store find, silver ornaments.
After adding the silver ornaments, gluing each down here are there around the wreath, it just needed a hanger on the back. I used a little scrap of fabric, and secured it well on both sides on the back of the wreath to create a hanger. And voila! our new, and thrifty Christmas wreath was done.
Thank you as always for reading, your sweet comments make my day, and I love to hear what you are up to. Hugs & Blessings
xoxo, Tanya

So cool! I would never have thought you could make a wreath out of a pool noodle. Genius! Looks very cute and festive 🙂 Will have to put this on my Christmas craft list.
How clever! I have to make a trip to Dollar Tree this week for Operation Christmas Child gifts. I hope they have pool noodles!
