Dollar Store Skull goes Glam | Krista from The Happy Housie

Hello readers of twelveOeight!

It is Krista from the happy housie back again and excited to be here sharing a fun project for Halloween… how to transform plastic dollar store skulls with a little spray paint, vinegar, and water!

To make this you will need:

  • A plastic skull (mine is from the Dollar Tree)
  • Spray Paint in black and silver (or you could do gold)
  • Vinegar and Water (50/50 mix) in a spray bottle
  • Paper towels
Here is my little friend skully-skull before his transformation. A good prop for Halloween décor but looking like he had just arrived home from a dollar store (which he had).

I started by giving him a thorough coat of Flat Black Krylon Spray Paint:

Once the base coat was totally dry I moved on to part two. The next part of the process is really hard to photograph because you have to work super quickly, so here is the verbal run down:
– set your spray bottle so that it sends out beads of vinegar/water spray and not just a fine mist
– spray the skull with your vinegar/water mix -you want the vinegar/water to look beady
-immediately spray paint the silver over-top of the vinegar/water mixture
– immediately again spray the vinegar/water mixture onto the silver spray to remove some of it in a beaded fashion

Ta-da! Let it dry- you can wipe it off with the paper towels – and you now have a customized skull that looks much more expensive than the dollar store fella you began with.
