We almost missed this huge lantern when thrifting recently.
There it sat, super dirty and full of cobwebs, looking sad and sitting on the dusty floor of our local thrift shop.
It was the price tag that got out attention, $6.99 at Goodwill for a huge metal and glass lantern that is screaming for a makeover. For a minute I wondered if this was a joke because this was a seriously good deal. This beauty is over 24″ tall and did she land in our cart fast, as we discussed what her new life was going to look like.
Here is the before…..EW.
It has a solar panel on the top and as I flip flopped back and forth trying to decide if I wanted it to be indoor or outdoor I realized it could be both. Because if I did use it outside I would not use the solar panel for light, this freed up some painting options and I saw myself using it on my dining room table or our outdoor dining area under our covered patio.
Squeal.
Paint.
Pretty candles.
Yes, this little lady is going to be farm-housey and fabulous.
Here is what we did.
First we carefully removed the glass panels, I love how the lantern looks without them and they were kind of thin and made me nervous with kids and pets possibly bumping into the lantern.
Then the rest of the lantern received a good cleaning and we removed the solar candle and platform on which it stood.
We have a few pieces of reclaimed barn wood left over from another project so we cut a few pieces down to fit inside and make a new platform for candles to sit upon.
After two coats of flat white spray paint, the new barnwood base and a couple of pretty candles she was all done.
I love this lantern sooooo much! And it was so easy to take a sad old outdoor solar lantern and turn it into a piece of farmhouse goodness for our home.
Thank you so much for reading friend and I hope you have a wonderful week!
