Fresh boho family room-Summer Blog Tour

Hello friends! I am super excited to be part of a wonderful tour showing how we transition into Summer decor in our homes! A huge thank you to Kristi for all of the hard work and putting this together for us! You can find Kristi’s lovely blog here 🙂

Our family room is just off the kitchen in our mid-century modern home built in the 70’s. It is definitely a space we use a lot! This room gets some serious family time as together we have 6 kids ranging from ten to thirty and five grands. We’re not always all in the same place but on an average day I am reminding someone that their Doritos bag would look even more amazing in the garbage than on the coffee table, and following the trail of shoes and socks to the nearest teenager.

Which is why this space needs to be inviting, and fun. I wanted it to be pretty but not stuffy, and if we happen to have an epic Nerf war taking place and something gets knocked over it’s not the end of the world.

We have a rectangular family room and to soften any space I love to mix textiles and bring in softer shapes so everything is not square. Circles are kind of my jam, I am not sure when this started but they are right up there with plants and pillows. But every space softens with something round. This coffee table is a Craigslist find that was perfect, well for me at least. The top has a warped spot but I love it even more, it has a story and the more use it gets the more I love it!

Our house is just under 1700 square feet and we love to entertain. I like to tuck chairs in here and there so when we have friends and family over we can grab chairs and gather in our family room or living room. The chair is a thrift store find from Seattle and the modern art a Goodwill score.

I would not say that I am addicted to thrifting, but if there was a level that is still healthy and no-one is going to put you on an A & E show about your “problem” then that is the thrifting level that I am at 🙂 I am not alone right?

I have not shared my boho ottoman yet but this was a solid but less than inspiring find from a local thrift store. I got this fabric and realized it was way to thick for my sewing machine so I went with a hot glue deconstructed vibe. I like that it is a contrast to the sofa and does not match. Plus it is crazy soft and comfy, I am usually politely moving a sleeping dog to be able to use the ottoman. Apparently it makes a good spot for naps too.

When you have either a big space or a long room it takes a bit of tweaking to get it all the way you want it to feel decorated enough without feeling like it’s too much. That line is different for everyone don’t you think? We just have to experiment and take some chances until we get it right.

And if you are anything like me a few months later you have the itch to switch it all up again…I love hearing my hubby Troy say “I thought you just finished this space”…..finished…..what is that?!

Pillows are my go to, I love them. We have more than I care to admit (do the ones in the hall closet count? Oh they don’t? Whew good, then we have just enough) they SO change the vibe and bring all the cozy feels into a space.

I love curling up on the sofa with popcorn and a good movie with tons of pillows. It must be genetic as I just walked by my middle-schooler’s room and found all of the guest pillows on his bed this weekend. Mind you they had an arsenal of Nerf guns on them but you get what I am saying, I could see him joining me at Target for a pillow haul someday. A girl can dream 🙂

The little white table was a score from Habitat for Humanity, I was going to leave the natural bamboo tone but it was pretty scuffed up and I like it white too. The floor lamp is from Target and the curtains are a Goodwill upcyle with some pretty jute fringe on the hem!

If none of the furniture really goes together I find that painting them all the same color will pull a space together even if they are different styles. Or contrasting colors can be awesome too. I love both color and lots of white too, I like that juxtaposition between modern and shabby. Light and dark. I just painted our entry way a warm terra cotta, I can’t wait to share it!

This door we found this winter at a local shop and I instantly fell in love with it. I needed something really long on this wall and I have had a few things here since we bought our home in 2018 but the door worked right away.

I painted the sconces that were black (and have hung in like 20 apartments, townhomes and houses in recent decades) and added the wood accent pieces on each side from Target. It still needed something soft however, fiber art and twinkle lights to the rescue! Works every time.

The rug is from Wayfair and the pillows are mostly from Target with a couple Marshall’s finds and some I have recovered myself too. While it is still rainy some days here in Washington State I cannot wait for Summer to get here!

Thank you so much for visiting me today! You can find me on IG here and I would love for you to click the next link below and check out all of the gorgeous inspired spaces you will find on our tour!!

Until next time-

xo, Tanya
