How to make a framed chalkboard + and some “yester-decor”

This is a pretty fast project & one that I have done before, but I had to share the before/after as it is
always so fun to see the power of a little paint & work!

I am convinced that one can never have enough of the following, feel free to add to this list:

  1. Spoons (we seem to run out every day)
  2. Diet Coke, it’s the real editor here at twelveOeight
  3. Thrift store money
  4. Jo-Ann’s, Michaels, and Hobby Lobby coupons
  5. Time to spend on Pinterest
  6. Time to spend reading
  7. Craft supplies of ALL kinds
  8. Chalkboards

There are many more, but these seem to be the ones that come to mind today.  I think one of the reasons that I like
DIY Chalkboards is because they are super easy to make & every room needs a little black to anchor it.  So, with
chalkboards scattered throughout my home, I seem to have found a good balance.  But, I came across this print
from yester-decorating this week and took it apart.

What did we find on the back side? Oh a nice, flat sheet of MDF (medium density fibreboard) that was in need of
some DIY decor attention.  Here is what I did to turn this circa-2005 Tuscan delight into something that is in
keeping with my tastes today.

Supplies:

  • One outdated framed print or “painting” that has a hard surface on the back (you can also have an                                        inexpensive piece of MDF cut to fit into your frame at stores like The Home Depot.
  • Spray paint in your color of choice.  I like to use Krylon and chose Blue Ocean Breeze (partly because I love the name and it’s pretty!)
  • Chalkboard Spray Paint, Krylon is my favorite
  • Chalk & cotton cloth

Directions:

Remove your picture or hard surface you have cut for the center and set aside.  Use two good coats of paint for
the frame, allowing each to dry well in between.  Next, apply one to two coats of Chalkboard paint to the hard
surface you are using for the chalkboard, allowing each to dry well and let them cure for at least a few hours.
Using the side of your chalk run the chalk back and forth all over the chalkboard, then rub the cloth  in a
circular motion which will act as a seasoning to your chalkboard to prep it for use (and also removes the excess
chalk powder.)  Secure your chalkboard in it’s frame, and enjoy how amazing you are.

It looks great!

See, and you didn’t think you could make one on the cheap!

    1. Thank you Christine, I haven’t applied the chalkboard paint to glass yet, sounds like the next chalkboard!

      xo

  2. Great job, Tanya! I actually have this project on my list for the Pinterest Challenge. I found a perfect old frame at a thrift store, it was large and had a cool frame. But they wanted $85.00. I was floored! Needless to say, that stayed there and I’m still looking!
Thank you for sharing this at Brag About It Link Party on VMG206.

    1. Megin,

That drives me crazy too! Good luck finding the perfect frame, can’t wait to see what you find creative lady – xo

    1. Thank you Lynn, I have found myself trying to figure out any surfaces that would make a good chalkboard, this was the easiest for sure!

      xo, Tanya

  3. You actually make it appear so easy with your presentation but I in finding this topic
to be really one thing which I believe I would by no means understand.
It seems too complicated and extremely vast for me.
I’m looking ahead to your subsequent publish, I’ll
try to get the grasp of it!
