I have very dry skin which gets worse each winter, so I am always on the lookout for a solution to keeping it moisturized during the winter months.
I am a little late to party on these as I had no idea lotion could be in bar form until visiting my little sister in Seattle this past spring.
She showed me one she had purchased from a boutique in Seattle and I thought as wonderful as the lotion bar smelled and felt on my skin, I bet I could make one!
If you struggle in the winter trying to keep your skin not looking like the Sahara then you will love how rich and moisturizing these bars are.
I was a little intimidated to try my hand at these since my attempt at candles looks like a sad puddle of wax.
But these are easy, and to keep it super simple I based my recipe off the equal three parts recipe I found here.
You can add a bit of essential oil, but I think they smell great just like they are.
I tried a few different ingredients but so far my favorite it a common three ingredient blend of organic coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax.
I don’t have a double boiler so I just used a mid sized sauce pan inside of a low sided stock pot with a couple inches of water in between the two. It worked great.
I used silicone muffin “tins” and this recipe made 8 bars if I filled each to the top.
Using equal parts of coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax pellets (I started with one cup of each) you stir them as they continue to melt.
Once the solid material is completely melted, remove from heat and add a couple teaspoons of vitamin E oil and your essential oil once the mixture has cooled about 10 minutes.
Carefully pour the mixture into your silicone molds (they don’t need to be prepped at all, just clean and I put mine on top of a large cookie sheet) allow to set completely (mine were totally solid a cool after a couple hours but I let them sit for about 3 hours before removing them and wrapping them in plastic for future use and gift giving.
Everyone I gave them to this year loved them and I am just about out of my supply so I think I will make another batch this weekend.
Have you made your own homemade lotion bars or homemade skin care before?
As always, thank you for reading friend, and I hope these last few days of 2018 find you full of peace, and joy as we are about to ring in a new year!
xoxo,
Tanya
