How to Shibori | trending DIY

You needn’t have spent time at a summer music festival or at a Grateful Dead event to
appreciate the rapidly trending art of Shibori.  If you did, then you are probably still
recovering and a good DIY project is just what is needed.

There are many techniques of Shibori, the technique we are most accustomed to seeing is
similar to tie-dye.  But Shibori also takes into account the type of fabric being dyed, as well
as the desired pattern.

Kind of a Feng Shui for textile dying.

The Shibori technique dates back for centuries, being first documented in 8th century Japan.
Not only does the art of Shibori create beautiful hand-dyed cloth, it can be as individual and
personal as the artist creating it.

So are you ready to Shibori with me?

Oh fabulous!

Let’s grab some supplies and DIY the day away…here is what I used to make my Shibori:

  • Pack of flour sack towels
  • Package of Rit Dye (I used Navy blue)
  • Rubber bands or string
  • Two large bowls
  • Rubber gloves

I began by folding my towels a few different ways in order to create a different pattern on each
towel.   Next, I used rubber bands as you see in the picture, followed the instructions on the Rit Dye
package, and dipped each of the prepared towels into the blue dye.  I loved how the Navy Blue
color gave me a gorgeous chambray effect when I was done.

First rinse each towel until they run clean in cold water, or close to clear.
Remove rubber bands, and rinse well again.
Hang your fabulous new towels up to dry, and enjoy!

I love how mine turned out, and I cannot wait to use one at an angle as a centerpiece, or
focal point for a buffet dinner.

So fun!

So what do you think, it’s really easy and wasn’t near as messy as I had thought it would be.
Think of all the rich fall colors right around the corner…Shibori pillows, Shibori napkins, Shibori runner,
My wheels are turning too 🙂

Thank you SO much for creating with me today friend, have a wonderful day!!
