Organized Entryway Closet

To fully appreciate any makeover, we have to see how truly horrific
a space was prior to it’s new, pretty life.
My name is Tanya, and I don’t clean my closets very often.
There, I said it.

And after a long, rainy winter our entryway closet was a full-on
gross mess. You couldn’t find a matching shoe to save your life.
And it wasn’t very pretty to look at.

So with the help of my favorite organizing secret weapon, Command hooks and strips
and a few other pieces, our closet is ready for a summer full of fun trips to the park,
and many a sandy flip flop.

Here is what I did:

First I re-purposed a few things I already had.
Having two kids in diapers allows you to collect more than enough diaper boxes
to build a stadium or castle.  I chose to recover a couple of them and add some
pretty sisal handles, (I will show you how this week.)

Next I made a stop at one of my fave stores Ross Dress For Less (I know, the name
is SUPER cheesy but they have great stuff!) and picked up this wicker hinged trunk
and pretty aqua and tan striped rug.
The trunk is airy and light, perfect for stowing away shoes, and the rug is pretty so I
bought it (hee-hee:)

I used my 3M adhesive tape along the back edges of an IKEA “Luns” chalkboard/organizer

that I painted to match my rug.  Which I hung on the inside of the closet door.
Next I added three Command hooks underneath the IKEA organizer.
Every time I open this closet a ton of shoes fall out and a sad, boring white door
greets me.  So now, I can write something fun on our chalkboard like
“you look amazing today”
“did you drop a couple sizes or something?”
“you are a wonderful Mom, open in five minutes and read again, and again”
or for those special days…
“this too shall pass”
Always a good reminder on those days.
I have my little jute tote ready for the library or farmer’s market, and a
happy little perch to set my mail and keys upon coming home.
I am kind of liking this whole organizing thing.
I may keep going and try this in another room.
And I found shoes I had not seen is so long.
It’s like going to the mall for free!

  1. I love everything about how you organized your entry Tanya! You've inspired me to work on mine! 🙂 I don't clean my closets very often either! love how you used the diaper boxes; I have so many of those that I could use as well! can't wait to see how you added the sisal rope! 🙂

  2. What an incredible difference, good for you. Isn't it freeing to clean out something that's been bugging you for ages? So fun to accomplish something constructive and useful.
Ah yes the good old days of ratty closets…we still have them. I always thought that's what closets were for, to shove things in when you don't want to put things away or somebody's coming so you

  3. You have not even seem a messy hall closet until you have seen mine! We are to the point of just throwing things in and trying to slam the door before anything falls out. . . literally! I am inspired by your clean space! Life to the full! Melissa @ DaisyMaeBelle

  4. Tanya, it looks absolutely fabulous!! I love the transformation… isn't it fun to look at your closets after you organize them;) (instead of that anxious feeling you get when you open an out of control closet- or is that just me?). Amazing job!

  5. Love how you put everything together T! LOVE the chalkboard too!!

Thanks so much for sharing this at The DIY Dreamer… From Dream To Reality last week! Looking forward to partying with you again tomorrow evening!
