Paper + lace dream catcher for Abbie’s room

We have been in our home for five years, and I have a confession to make.

I have done very little with the kids bedrooms.  Gasp.  I know, that’s a pretty racy confession right?
Tell me if this sounds familiar.  We moved in when #3 had not yet arrived.  Then 15 months after #3 was here
#4 joined the family, and for the next few years we would rearrange the rooms, reconfigure, and my eldest
would move out, then back home, then back out again before she married and started her own family.
Decorating their rooms is something I think of often, but in a way, I am kind of glad I waited.
Now the kids are 7, 4, and 3 with lots of ideas, and quite vocal about what they do and do not like.
Which makes my job as their decorator/Mom to figure out how I can create a space that they will love and I
can afford to put together a little easier.

So, what does a dream catcher have to do with kids bedroom design? I found this piece of vintage lace at a
thrift store a few months ago.  I have a hard time passing over vintage linens even if they will rarely be used
because I have to give them a good home.  I guess it’s like taking in strays.  Their safety and future are in my
hands.  Do you find yourself doing the same thing when you see something you love?
Some people call it “hoarding”.  They are wrong, don’t listen to them.

I have always wanted to make a dream catcher, but just never have.  Probably mostly because I am super
allergic to feathers.  And, they never really seemed to go with my style, even though they interested me.
I took huge liberties with this dream catcher that I made for Abbie’s room, the first of the bedrooms to get
a makeover.  And hopefully, it will allow the bad dreams to pass through and not return, catching the good
dreams and keep them tucked safely within it’s lace.

Here is what I used:

Supplies

  • One metal ring for base (I chose an 8 ” ring as it fit my lace well)
  • Piece of lace work or lacy material
  • Thread to match & needle, scissors
  • 5 yards of coordinating (I used an off white color) suede lacing
  • Scrap book papers (heavy stock) in colors of your choice
  • Hot glue
  • Clothes pins

Directions

Begin by wrapping lace around the ring, and hold it in place with clothes pins around the edges.  Fold the lace
around the back of the ring and stitch lightly in place to hold it on the ring.  If using a piece of lace that has
holes in the design, you can then lace your suede cord around the edges of the ring.  I left some of the brass
showing as it picked up some of the glimmer from the gold on my scrap book paper.

Next, I cut out some feathers in varying sizes free hand from my papers, and folded each lengthwise.  Using
my scissors I cut long, thin strips along the rounded out edges of each paper feather, creating a fringe along
each edge.  Tying strips of suede cord around the bottom edge of the ring, and gluing the paper feathers onto
the ends of each created the hanging-feather look I wanted.  A small loop of cord, for two more feathers and
another for a hanger at the top, and I was done!

There are dressers to paint, a bed frame to repair, more painting, and some thrifty decor to put together before
we are done.  But I am so excited to make this my first big project for spring.
The kids are pretty excited too.  I am creating the idea boards for each room on Olioboard.
This site is really fun, I feel like I am shopping for all of the things I would love to get, without the price tag.
I may have to break down and pick up a few things that I don’t what to try to do on my own, but I think it
will be super fun.
Do you have a first, big project planned or underway for spring? I would love to hear about it!

  1. Oh, the kids’ rooms… My 6 year old son finally got a room to himself about a YEAR ago, and I’ve wanted to work on it ever since! I’ve collected things for the project that even he is excited about, but it just hasn’t made it to the top of the list yet. I know you understand 🙂
Right now, I walk into his room, survey the mayhem and turn around and walk out, ha! I really will get to it soon. Really.
Your dream catcher is just darling! My oldest daughter made a dream catcher for her 16 year old sister for Christmas, and my 16 year old made paper feathers out of old maps for her friends for Christmas. It must be in the air! I’m going to show them your cute combination.
Oh boy, I have a thing for collecting those treasured pieces of fabric, too! Notice how long this comment is? Think maybe I’m avoiding cleaning my son’s room? : )
    Have a wonderful weekend, friend!

  2. Jeanette,

Haha, I love your description of walking into your son’s room, sounds very familiar! So it sounds like your kids have caught the creativity bug as well, that is so sweet for your daughter to make something for her younger sister, I love that 🙂

    Have a wonderful weekend!!

  3. Awesome site you have here but I was curious about if you knew of any discussion boards that cover
the same topics discussed in this article? I’d really like to be a part of online community where I can get feedback from other experienced individuals that share the same interest.
If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Bless you!
