Pottery Barn Inspired Rolling Basket

This is a post about being inspired by a basket online, and
creating one out of simple supplies for my laundry room
makeover.

But first I have a story about having someone in our lives
that we admire, and pearl earrings too.

When I was a little girl we had a Bon Marche in our town, and
they had a very classy restaurant where my Grandma and I
would dine after an exhausting morning of shopping.
Sometimes Grandma’s sister Alice would join us.

I was fascinated by Alice.

She had beautiful white hair, in a perfect coif.
Alice was always dressed very fashionably, and drove a huge car.
She had a lovely home which I loved her house because it was
on a hill and overlooked the whole valley.
And it was chock full of gorgeous things.

But Alice had a thrifty side, which when I realized at the ripe age
of four or five, made me think she was even more wonderful.

When I was forward enough to ask her about her giant pearl
earrings, something like “Aunt Alice, your pearl
earrings are pretty, did they cost a lot?”
One of those moments you cringe, and give your child that
look like “HAVE I TAUGHT YOU NOTHING?”
But in all her grace and wisdom, Alice leaned down and
told me that she liked earrings, doesn’t like to lose them,
and if she does, doesn’t want to spend more than $4 for them.

In the jewelry department at the Bon Marche of course.

That was an aha moment for me.  This glamorous, refined,
kind woman who I thought was amazing bought $4 pearl
earrings.  Brilliant.

Ready to make a Rolling Storage Basket? Me too.
Here is the basket from Pottery Barn that had me drooling,
and while I love so many Pottery Barn items for the home.
The basket was a fun DIY to see if I could make something
similar:

I started out with a large wicker basket, and a few basic
materials you can pick up easily.
I began by applying a good coat of Krylon Black Spray
Paint in a satin finish all over the basket.
After it was dry, I used sandpaper all over to distress and
age the look of the paint.
Next I turned the basket over and attached the four casters
(use casters with a flat top that have holes to use screws in)
with E6000 adhesive and let it dry out in my garage overnight.
This adhesive is excellent, but remember to use it in a well
ventilated area and let it set overnight.

Voila!
A fabulous rolling basket for next to nothing.  I spent $6 on
the casters, and the cost of the paint (on sale) was $3.29
so I was right at $10.00.

So if I lose it, like a big faux pearl earring, or it breaks from
being used as a sled this winter by children who will go
nameless, it can be replaced.

Let’s put our hair up, put on some big pearls, and get
to painting!

Hugs,

  1. Oh how I love that story!! Love the basket too. I have so many around here, new idea to put them to use! Just one question, did you screw them on as well as glue them? BTW, I love that glue, miracle stuff.
