Upcycled Sofa Table

I have been looking for a narrow dresser or low sofa table
for a while with no success.  I have seen some great
pieces but nothing that would fit behind my monster
sectional and define the space between it and my dining
area.  So what do we do when we cannot find what
we want? We make it ourselves.
Shopped the garage first…

I already had two low bar stools that I replaced
quite a while ago, but couldn’t part with
(example #974 that a mild case of hoarding is good for you)
I knew I wanted them to contrast with the table top
so I used three coats of heirloom white spray
paint on each, and distressed them with sandpaper.
Now I just needed the table top and shelf.
So off to the lumber department
at Home Depot.

I pulled on my work gloves and dug to the back for
the best pieces in the pile.  I found two pieces that
were nice and straight and had great knots & grain.
When I buy lumber that needs to be perfectly flat
for a table, shelf etc…I lay each piece on the
floor to make sure they are not warped before I
buy them.
I chose a piece that was 12″ wide for the table top
and another piece that was 8″ wide to fit between
the stool legs to serve as a lower shelf.
Using Dark Walnut stain by Minwax, the
wood soaked the stain up quickly.  I applied one good
coat on each piece of wood, and once
it reached the desired color, I wiped off the excess
stain and allowed them to dry.  I sanded each piece
well to age them, and smooth out any rough edges.

I love how the stain accented the beautiful knots
and pattern in the wood.  So pretty!!
I put the pieces in place and used four wood screws
on each side to attach the table top to the tops of the
stools. A dab of matching brown paint
helped the tops of the screws blend in.
And a line of wood glue under the lower shelf
on each side to attach it to the stool rung it rested on.

One more night of drying in the garage,
a little bit more sanding, and a good polish with
Howard Feed-N-Wax
and my new sofa table was done!
I first heard about this wonderful natural furniture
polish from Sausha at Sweet Pickins Furniture.
