How to update a 1970’s dresser

Sometimes a piece of furniture comes your way and it takes a while to decide what to do with it.

Should I re-stain it, maybe a darker cooler color like a walnut?

Should I white-wash it and put new, fun knobs on it?

But this dresser had it’s destiny before it became mine.

My good friend, who I get the blessing of also working with was down-sizing some pieces and announced that their son no longer needed his bunk bed set and dresser.

We have been trying to decide if we are going to build bunk beds for the boys or find a set for a while now.

Lo and behold the stars aligned and last Saturday we became the proud owners of a new to us bunk bed that fits perfectly in their room.

And, this dresser that the manufacturer blessedly stamped his date on “1972” which made me happy to see that this piece has been around for a few years and is getting her very first makeover.

Here is the before (I usually dive in with glee to a furniture redo and have to snap photos halfway thru as the paint is flying and I can barely contain my excitement!)

We have another dresser that we already owned that also received the same makeover, this beautiful Ultramarine Chalky Finish paint with Copper painted knobs.

And I love, love, love how they turned out.

The perfect light navy paint that is fun but still suitable for a young man’s room too.  We used a light coat of poly on top to help keep the paint from getting scratched.  And guess what? This is SPRAY PAINT!

Sure is, here is what we used:

This color really is so pretty that I think I may do one piece in our living room as there is not much blue anywhere.  A lot of white, and some green, and 5,000 pillows.  But not much blue.

The boys are ecstatic and so excited to climb into their “new” bunk bed every night, and enjoy seeing a big makeover on their room they have had for so long.

I don’t quite have them excited to put away their laundry yet, maybe you can give me some ideas on that.

So here she is, all decked out with a new look, new knobs and filling her role in the room of two very happy boys.
