Burlap? Check.
Old picture frame with hideous oak stain
(and no glass)? Check.
A little paint, a stencil, paper, jute twine
and a piece of cork? Check. Check.
Last but not least, a pretty lone vintage fork
I have had forever? Check!
The hallway leading from my kitchen to the garage
is a great place for a message center
as we are constantly walking by it.
It’s also a fun open space to decorate
but I have been kind of stuck for a while not sure
what to put there. The hallway is wide enough
but I didn’t want to hang something there that
protrudes into the walkway.
A while ago I decided to spray paint this frame
with some black paint, and distress it.
Then it sat in the garage for a year.
I start/stop projects too, in fact a mere year passing
was pretty good!
The pieces kind of came together as I
thought about how much I love
vintage/industrial/farmhouse/affordable style
and could use a message center for this area.
Here is what I did to make a new message board
for my kitchen hallway:
I began by cutting out a spare piece of
cork board from a sheet I had
left over from a previous project.
(This previous project was a FAIL,
hence the reason you have not seen it.)
I cut it to fit inside the picture frame with a tiny
bit of room to spare for the burlap.
Next I cut a piece of burlap and folded it
around the edges, using a dab of hot glue
in the corners and holding in place until each area set.
Once the burlap was attached to the cork
I used a line of hot glue around the edges of
where the burlap and wood meet on the
back of the frame.
I used a little E-6000 to attach the fork
to the bottom center of the frame.
Using some ivory acrylic paint and a sponge pouncer,
the scrolly stencil went in opposite corners next.
After that came the cute little bunting
to go across the top of the message board.
It was as simple as cutting out each shape,
hole punching the top corner of each,
and running a piece of jute twine to hang it.
I love these papers I found recently at Michaels.
I will admit to perhaps buying a bit too much
scrap book paper last weekend.
And Ryan Gosling was not there to enable me,
with one of his wonderful “Hey Girl’s” which was a bummer.
But I was still able to shop.
Now I have a pretty area in my previously boring hallway
that is functional and fun
but still ties in with my kitchen.
Thank you so much for creating with me
and following along.
I love to stay connected with you, please
make sure you are following below too so
you don’t miss a thrifty thing!

Love it! Want one! Love the fork and the burlap. Definitely pinning! (And weaning myself off exclamation points, ha ha!)
So beautiful!
This is so pretty, Tanya! I'm so proud of you for pressing on with shopping even *without* Ryan Gosling (hehe). I'm off to pin this, have a good weekend!

Love this! What a great way to repurpose things! Thanks for sharing at Pinworthy Projects.
This looks fab! x
Good idea making this into a message board and if the frame was only in the garage for a year, sounds like you are doing well!

Love the black battered up frame, and you just can't beat burlap with a stick – it's great stuff!
Burlap is a wonderful thing..LOVE this!
My goal this week is to finish something. You managed to do this with fantastic results. Love the rough texture of the burlap and the distressed goodness of the frame. Stick a fork in it – it is done!
