Washed canvas pumpkins + early fall

It didn’t take much for the Fall Bug to hit hard here at casa twelveOeight.

One rainy afternoon and a couple fall Scentsy cubes and I found myself going thru my fall decor in the garage…

Pinning some casseroles…

And thinking up a new way to ease our home into early fall without too much of a backlash from the rest of the tribe.

We have had many days in the 90’s and even over 100 degrees in the Pacific Northwest lately.

To say I am looking forward to some rain seems a little strange, but that is just too hot for this girl.

And, I happen to adore Fall, and everything about it.

I like to keep my interior fall decor pretty simple, a few touches here and there, knowing how much Christmas decor we will have in a few months, one must not lose their mind completely.

My porch is probably the area in which I go all out for fall, but I wait until we are further into it to hang garlands and create a cozy spot for cider and watching leaves fall.

Even to lovers of Summer, you have to admit that sounds wonderful.

Being fairly thrifty I like to re-use as much as I can or up-cycle what I am able to.

I knew I wanted to make fabric covered pumpkins again this year.

But I wanted them to be different this time.

Recently my friend and I spent the morning picking the final blueberries at a local farm, and we stopped at a few of our favorite spots, including Goodwill.

I found three forlorn pumpkins for $1.99 each and my idea for soft white fall pumpkins came together.

The smaller pumpkins had their “stems” so I had to remove them, knowing I wanted to use branches from a tree in our yard for the new stems.

I had done some experimenting with canvas a while ago and decided to wash a yard.  It turned out much softer, and wrinkly.  And there it sat as I was not sure what I would use it for.

For the larger pumpkin I tore the washed canvas into 2 inch strips, and 1 inch strips for the smaller pumpkins.

I used a bit of hot glue to secure each strip, as I worked my way around the pumpkin.

I love the frayed edges of the fabric.

We cut a small branch from a tree in our yard, and three pieces (I love the one on the right with the darker wood inside!) were the perfect size for stems.

I was not sure what I would use for the leaves, but cutting out a couple leaf shapes and tugging at the edges created perfect “leaves” for each one.

I used a bit of hot glue to attach the stems to each pumpkin, and that was it.

Pretty easy and I really love how soft they look.

Kind of like the pumpkin version of your favorite faded jeans, or the softest sweatshirt you own.

I just love them, they are Fall-ish, but in keeping with the lighter hues I want to use this year.

And against wood, they look soooo pretty.

I am already thinking about this washed canvas, and the Christmas possibilities….

I know right?! Me too, I can’t wait, but I need to hold my horses.

We took a hike today before the heat headed back up to the 90’s.

Walking on the little path with my family, listening to everyone’s ideas and thoughts, I felt so much peace.

There was not another place I would rather be than on that trail hearing the sound of their voices.

I think that is one of the reasons I love fall so much.  That while it does not have the splendor and bright colors of spring, it is like being home.

Cozy, happy and just right.

Thankful for the smells and sounds in our home, glad for the place we come together, and just be.

A cozy blanket, some good coffee, and a pumpkin or two that have been given a second chance.

My people.

All is right in the land.

What is your favorite thing about Fall? Do you have some projects in the hopper? I love to hear what you are up to…

Until next time-

Stay crafty-

  1. Oh how I love these, what a great idea and I just adore the plain canvas! I miss the Northern Fall a lot and love everything about it, here in the South there is just no such thing. But I´m trying to make the best of it this year and not whine, lol. Enjoy your fall and make more pumpkins, they are so adorable!!!

    1. Thank you so much Katrin, you are so sweet friend 🙂 it’s certainly more challenging to feel in the spirit when the temps are high. But we forge ahead! Love seeing all your creative goodness too 🙂

  2. I have been thinking of making soft pumpkins but they need more filling than I have so using faux pumpkins would be perfect applying strips of canvas (in my case drop cloth) glued on them. Love the idea and making something little different this year. Every year I make new Fall decorations just cause it’s fun and I love Fall.
We live few miles west of /grand Junction, CO out in rural area. Can hardly wait for Fall and cooler temps, been hot in 90’s here for weeks/months. Last winter was so mild barely got to wear any sweaters doggoned it.
Love the shaggy edges of your canvas strips. When I make curtains I like to leave the selvedge edges as they are. The shaggy edges go so wonderfully with the canvas strips. You sure have inspired me to make some.
Am waiting more toward end of Sept. before I dig out my Fall decorations, per hubs request. Says he just feels crowded so need to keep volume down also when I do put any up. Our living room is small so can see what he means. When I decorate too early by end of Oct. even I am getting weary of it all.
    Have wonderful weekend

    1. Hi Jane Ellen!
I totally understand what you mean, it’s been super hot here in the Pacific NW too. It’s hard to imagine blustery Fall days are around the corner. I LOVE your idea with the ragged selvage edge of fabric for curtains, how fabulously shabby!!

Have a wonderful week friend, xoxo

  3. Really pretty Tanya. Just enough to evoke fall without going overboard… like I do! Haha!!

We have had ridiculous temps here too and I cannot wait for it to cool down.

    1. I am so glad it is cooler this weekend, hopefully it will cool down for you too! Thank you so much for your sweet message Mary 🙂

      xoxo

  4. Such a fun fall project Tanya… and who doesn’t love a white pumpkin!!
Thank you for linking up at Create, Bake, Grow & Gather this week. I’m delighted to be featuring your canvas pumpkin at tonight’s party and pinning too!
    Hugs,
