DIY Bohemian Style Woven Tapestry

Do you ever wish you had a super cool tapestry for a table or your wall?

And perhaps it looks like something you would find in an amazing shop full of Bohemian fabulousness.

But you made it, and it was easy, and thrifty as well.

Inspired by so many gorgeous woven wall hangings and recycled fiber projects I keep seeing, I thought I might give
weaving a shot and see if I like it.

 Not only did I find myself staying up very late in the weaving zen zone, I loved it!

And if you use materials you already have, or for the most part, making a pretty Boho tapestry is not hard at all.
I followed the instructions I found at the Free People Blog (I can get lost there for hours, it’s ah-ma-zing)
and made my loom from a piece of foam core board from Dollar Tree. 

I’m officially hooked, and I hope you are interested in learning more about woven and fiber art too, because I
have a feeling I will be making another one soon. 

This time for the wall I think…oh the possibilities!!

Here is what I used to make my Bohemian Style Woven Tapestry…

Supplies:

• Large piece of foam core board and something round to use as a pattern (I used a large round basket)
• Pencil
• Measuring tape or yardstick
• Straight Edge (this cuts through the foam core board quickly and evenly, they are so awesome to have handy)
• Assorted yarn, trim, pom pom fringe, anything you would want to incorporate in your project.

Directions:

I began by tracing the outer edge of what I used as my pattern (large basket) and cut along the line with my straight
edge until my circle was complete.  Next I measured the exact center of the circle, marked it. and began making lines all
around the circle like you would if you are cutting up pizza.  Making sure that each was equal, and making enough that once
I was done, the end of each line was about 1″ or just a bit more from the next all around the edge.

Using the straight edge, I made 1″ slits at the end of each line all around the edge of the circle.  These will the anchors for
the loom.

Please forgive the instructional photos, they were done with my iphone, late at night, after consuming large amounts
of Diet Coke, so…they are crappy, but you get the idea…

Beginning in the center, choose a piece of the anchor yarn and tie your accent yarn you will be weaving to it close to the
center of the loom.  Using either a large plastic needle or your fingers, weave your yarn all around the circle going
under/over each anchor piece. 

When you are ready to change to a different yarn or fiber, tie the end of the piece you are stopping to the end of the new
piece, and continue all around the edges, working your way out to the edge of the loom.

Once you have created the piece as large as you wanted, turn the loom over and trim all of the pieces of yarn on the back
to 2″ to 3″ long pieces.
Next, carefully remove the tapestry from the loom and tie each set of strings together to secure the woven material in
place.  Trim the end to leave about a 1″ fringe all the way around, and glue on a little pom pom to each spot where your
anchor yarn is tied.

You have an awesome handmade tapestry that you made on your own DIY loom!

I know, I keep staring at mine too, and my 5 year old keeps walking by and telling me it’s beautiful.
He has such good taste (hee hee.)
