At the after-Christmas sales last year I picked up a few fun new pieces to incorporate into
my holiday decorating.  Yep, it’s almost October and I am finally doing something with them!

One thrifty find was a paper mache deer, laying and looking backwards.
It was $1, and I knew I wanted to upcycle it into a faux mount of some sort.

Going through some very old decorating stuff I came across something that must have been
a leftover relic during the country, duck/pig sponge-paint-everything days.
This little gem needed a makeover, but the frame was really cool, and I figured if I used
some chalkboard paint, I could bring it back from pastel-ville.

Here is what I used to make my DIY Faux Taxidermy project:

  • paper mache deer head
  • picture frame
  • chalkboard paint
  • Martha Stewart rose gold acrylic paint
  • Chevron Frog Shape Tape
  • foam paint brush
  • white spray paint
  • hot glue
  • flowers to decorate deer

I began by using two coats of chalkboard paint on the picture and frame, allowing each to dry well
in between.  Once the frame and center were dry, I used the Chevron Frog Shape Tape to create the design,
and used the rose gold paint on the exposed areas.  It took three coats to look the way I wanted it to, a pretty
warm shimmery effect against the black chalkboard paint looks really cool.

In the meantime, I used two coats of white spray paint to paint the deer head, and when it was dry,
brushed on two coats of the rose gold paint onto the antlers.  I love this color, it’s so pretty!!

The hot glue will make the paint peel if you aren’t careful, so I marked exactly where I wanted the deer
head to go on the frame, and glued it in place.  A little flower here and there, and I love how it turned out.

I decided to use fall colored flowers since we are half way through September already.  And I can always
change them with the seasons, or hang a pretty little bunting in those sparkly antlers.

Deer-friendly, and recycled, good for our furry friends and the budget too.

This turned out great and I love how you used the old frame! Did you get the deer head from Michael’s? I feel like I’ve seen them somewhere but now I can’t remember where.

      Hi Katie!

I found the paper mache deer at Salvation Army when they did their super clearance after Christmas, but I think it did originally come from Michael’s! Thank you so much for your sweet comment and visiting friend 🙂
