I will be the first to admit that I have way to much scrapbook paper, and find myself completing zero scrapbooking activities. However, I hope to redeem myself, or at least justify my paper-hoarding slightly by using some of these beautiful scrapbook papers from JoAnn’s to make this upcycled paper lantern. I have a kind of dark corner along my gallery wall in my living room that needed some warmth and color. I had picked up a lampshade at a local thrift store, and never returned it when it ended up not working with a lamp I already had. So, there it sat waiting to be re purposed on my work table in my garage. It’s more of a work-pile, but it sounds much more organized to say bench so I am going to stick with that. Are you ready to use some of the paper your probably already have on hand? I don’t suppose you have some glue, and empty jar and twine? Awesome, let’s get crafty…
What you need:
- lampshade (I used one with a metal ring and base inside of it that the jar could sit on top of, see picture #3)
- Scrapbooking papers in various textures, colors
- Scissors, empty soup can, pencil, hot glue, jute twine
- Flameless tea lights
Directions:
I used an empty soup can as the pattern for my circles, and on the back of each piece of scrapbook paper, traced around the bottom of the can so I had quite a few circles to overlap and cover my lampshade. Next, I used an empty salsa jar and applied hi-temp hot glue generously to the bottom and set it inside of the lampshade on top of the metal base. I also applied more glue and a firm circle of coordinating cardstock to keep the jar stable, as you can see in picture 3.
Next I strung jute twine thru the metal brackets on the inside of the lampshade, as in picture 4, tying it at the top to create a hanger for the lantern. After that I began gluing the paper circles in place, starting at the bottom of the shade, and allowing them to over-lap creating a scalloped bottom and scalloped effect all the way up the shade. My last step was to cut some of my remaining circles in half and glue them around the top of the lampshade leaving about 1/4″ excess. I then folded and glued this down to create a clean, smooth edge across the top of the lantern.
I filled the jar with flameless tea lights and am so excited with the results! Not only was it really easy and fun to make, I was able to use supplies I already had on hand so it was a zero cost craft project. And, that little corner is warm and colorful now, just what was needed!
