Driftwood wall hanging

How does a free or practically free awesome wall hanging sound?

And you can make it probably in less than 2 hours.

Are you in?

I thought so, we dig DIY projects that don’t take the entire weekend
around here too.  Along with working on Abbie’s Big Girl Bedroom makeover,
chasing kids all over the place, and cleaning up melted Otter Pops all day, I found
some time to walk.
And think.

It was hot and humid, and I would love to say my only mission was a little down time,
but the truth is, it was a combo activity.  A little stroll along the river, and some much
needed time outside, near the water, with some sand between my toes.

The best feeling ever.  And a bundle of beautiful driftwood.

I am debating bringing a box of sand home next time and setting it out in the sun to
warm up before I just stand in it and have a glass of wine.
Or maybe I will just take another walk, I am going to need more driftwood now
because the wheels are spinning and I just cannot get enough of this lovely,
weathered wood.

Each piece has it’s own history, origin, story.
Do you sometimes think we are all a little bit like a piece of wood that had sharper
edges a while ago, but time, and life smoothed those surfaces out a wee bit.
If you have access to a great source for driftwood, then a nice walk  should supply an
armload for you to work with.  If not, small tree branches, or for a very modern look,
wooden dowels cut at varying lengths would work great too.

Let’s make a wall hanging!

Supplies:

  • Variety of driftwood pieces
  • Assortment of paints (I like to use Acrylic)
  • Paint brushes
  • A few yards of suede cord
  • Two screw-eyes
  • Hot glue
  • Tape for stripes (freehand is ok too!)

Directions:

I began by painting some stripes, dots and lines in colors I liked together on each piece of driftwood.
I decided to leave the top piece unpainted, into which I put a screw eye on each end about 1″ in from
the end.  I ran a piece of suede cord through the screw eyes, and tied each end in a double knot to
secure.  Once my paint was dry, I cut a variety of suede cord pieces and added a dab of hot glue to
the end of each, one at a time, gluing each to the back of the wood hanger.  It doesn’t have to be
perfect, or uniform.  It will look better if you just go by what looks balanced and don’t measure.
I hate to measure, sorry.

And that’s it!
So what do you think about a free or so close to free it’s not even funny project?
I love them too.

Have a fabulous, creative & blessed week friends, love you SO!!
