Gold Herringbone To The Rescue: A Thrift Store Lamp Rescue

I remember seeing this same lamp on the set of Murphy Brown years ago,
or maybe it was Moonlighting….
Either way someone decided that a super-shiny brass lamp for your end
table was the way to go.
And we all bought them.
Next to our giant mauve sofa, and on a lacquered table they sat.
And if your decorating tastes were anything like mine back then,
you may have had a Duran Duran poster in your apartment living room.

Well, I grew out my spiral perm, and no longer have a fuchsia leather jacket.
And Simon had to go.
Four kids and a couple decades later, I hope my taste has improved some.
When I found this brassy lamp recently, my first apartment, mini-skirts,
and shoulder pads all came rushing back.
And I knew I had to save her from the 80’s brassy fate.

Here is what I used to turn her from brassy to classy:
Krylon Primer
Krylon Satin Spray Paint in white
Lamp in dire need of a makeover
Lampshade (and lamp harp if needed)
1″ wide Scotch 3M Pro Painter Grade Masking Tape
Small foam brush
14 K Gold Ceramcoat by Plaid acrylic craft paint
Scissors

After covering the top of the lamp and cord in paper towels and masking tape,
apply two coats of primer allowing each to dry well.  Once primer is dry apply
two coats of white spray paint, allowing each coat to dry well in between.
Paint a small strip of gold paint around the base of the lamp and set aside.
Using masking tape and scissors, create a herringbone patterns around the
lamp shade.  Carefully apply one good coat of gold craft paint and allow it
to dry well.  Remove tape, paper-wrapped top and cord and screw lamp
shade into place.

Find a fabulous place for your gorgeous new herringbone lamp in your home.
Enjoy!

You may already have an old lamp on hand that could use a little update.
If not it won’t take long to find one of these brassy ladies who needs your
help to get a new lease on life.  Until next time…

Fantastic makeover! Just yesterday I asked my man not to throw away a tired lamp because I was sure I could redo it. I'll have to ask him if a herringbone would be acceptable!

That lamp is great! I'm loving anything herringbone, PLUS gold…love it. Great job! Makes me want to run to my local Goodwill and scoop up all of the dated brassy lamps.
