How To Make A Modern Mirror

If you were asked what your decorating style is, what would you say? Contemporary, Traditional, Modern, Shabby, Country, French Country…most of us blur the lines more than we realize (especially DIY’ers!) Blurring the lines seems to be my official style, and I love to combine shabby with high-tech.  Modern with soft, a little unexpected and hopefully chic.

I love metallic finishes and y’all know I love me some spray paint.  I have tried making and upcycling a variety of mirrors, hot-gluing, sanding, distressing, painting, and I have come to realize that one cannot have enough picture frames, pillows, chalkboard, or funky mirrors.  One can also not have enough coffee, chocolate and Ryan Gosling pics saved on one’s computer.  But this project was so easy, I didn’t even need chocolate.  I know huh?!

I found a round mirror at Salvation Army for $5 a few months ago, the mirror came with a peeling Smurf sticker (only Goo-Gone would take it off!) and a lovely plasti-brass thin frame.  Into the craft room it went.  On another thrifting expedition I found a bag of 18 wood rings that you could use for hanging drapes.  They were under $3 so we are into this for eight bucks.  I already had this fabulous silver Metallic Krylon paint on hand from another project so the paint cost is at zero.  You don’t have to pick these items up thrifting to recreate this little modern belle, all could be found at WalMart or Target too.  Here is what I used, and how I went from Smurf-tastic to Awesomespice in one afternoon:

Supplies:
  • One mirror
  • Rings to go around the edge (I used 18 better to have too many if you find more)
  • Spray paint in the color of your choice.  I love this Krylon paint, zero priming!
  • Paper and tape to cover the glass while you paint
  • Super glue (I love Gorilla Super Glue) to attach painted rings to mirror

Directions:
  • Prep mirror by covering glass with paper and tape so paint does not sneak in.  If you are able to remove the frame, even better.
  • I used two coats of spray paint allowing each to dry well between coats on each side of the rings, and each side of the mirror.
  • Once they were all dry, I placed the rings around the edge of the mirror and I glued small dots of super glue on the underside of each ring, setting each in place down on the glass to dry.

Another good cleaning and this little modern beauty is hanging out with some of my new fall fabrics which are waiting to become “new” fall pillows this weekend.  Check back in next week to see how easy it is to recover pillows with and without sewing!

Happy creating, hugs & blessings to you and your family,

xoxo, Tanya
