How To Make Shutters

With enough scrap wood, one would rule
the world.  Or at least make some farmhouse
decor for your home I suppose.
If you have ever wondered how to make
a basic set of decorative shutters, it is far
easier than you may have imagined.
I have a long hallway in our home
on the 2nd level that has a lot of light
but it’s too narrow to do much with.
The kids are getting a bit older now and
better about (most days!) not getting
into as much as they used to.
So while I search for the perfect narrow
console table for that spot (may just have to
make that too) inspiration struck for these
shutters and some other fun projects
I will be sharing this Spring.
Here is what I used:
Six 36″ long pieces of scrap wood
Four 12″ long pieces of scrap wood
Screws long enough to go through the wood
but not exceed the depth of each piece
when attached.
Screw eyes and picture hanging wire.
Power drill (any opportunity to use
my power tools is a happy day)
First I attached the 12″ pieces to two of the
longer pieces 3″ from each end, and
overlapping about an inch on each side.
Next I turned each shutter over and attached
the last two long pieces to the back of each
shutter at an angle, as in the picture above.
The scrap wood was already white,
not sure why but I don’t ask a lot of
questions when I am the recipient of
free or inexpensive wood.

I mixed a color wash out of a
50/50 mix of water and turquoise
acrylic craft paint.
Yes, that is a semi-clean brush from
another project, don’t judge.

I brushed the color wash on and allowed
it to dry well, just one coat.  It turned out
way brighter than I anticipated but
it’s growing on me now.  Next came out
the palm held power sander and I made
quite a bit of noise getting these to their
current shabby state.  My neighbors are
very patient, and perhaps a bit curious
about what I actually “do”.
That’s ok, we will keep them wondering…

Now I just need to find that console table.  Or
perhaps dig around in my garage and see if
there is any lonely furniture that needs to be
made into something new again.

Thank you so much for reading, I
appreciate you so very much! If it wasn’t
for you, there would be no twelve O eight
and certainly no Pretty Things party every week.
Together we can make pretty things
for less, see you tonight for last week’s
party features and a whole new party.
Pour a glass of wine and put on some rouge
ladies! It’s Monday and time to get down
with your bad self.

Hugs & blessings
Tanya

The color is fantastic! And shutters are just too fun. (by the way, that looks a lot like my semi-clean paint brushes. Lol)

Great idea! I've been wanting shutters for the outside of my house and don't want plastic! I like your idea and might attempt these, or something similar. Love the color.
