How to paint furniture with a sprayer

I have a little confession to make.
While I love to paint furniture and am always looking for new ideas and creative ways to paint, I
have been a little hesitant to try a paint sprayer.

I know.

It’s probably silly, but the regular way has worked pretty well (minus a few brushstrokes) and I
wasn’t sure I would like using a sprayer.  So I shelved the idea.

That is until I had the opportunity to try one out from Home Right.  I was not
compensated to write about this sprayer, but I did receive a sprayer to try out and share my
experience painting furniture with it.  Here is what I used, the new Finish Max Pro.

It’s pretty cool.

The box arrived and I felt like it was Christmas morning, I was so excited and I have a ginormous
area in my garage full of pieces I want to paint.  But it’s pretty time consuming so alas, I have baked
and hot glued instead.  I decided to just start with one lone chair that desperately needed a makeover
as my first victim project.  This chair means so much to me, I have had it for over 20 years, and it has
been just about every color and style you can imagine.  It’s been purple, been sponge painted (I know,
I’m sorry chair, I really am) and had the seat covered about a dozen times.  Needless to say, she needed
to start fresh so she received a good sanding first.

Yep, that’s after a good sanding too.

This chair originally cost .50 cents at a yard sale years ago.  You may remember my “give it a wiggle”
tip when buying furniture at yard sales from last week’s How To Yard Sale Like A Boss.

Well, this pretty lady is the one who helped a naive young yard sale-er learn all about wobbly stuff and
how much it costs to fix it.  Thank goodness my Grandpa Duke and I were out together, I somehow
convinced him I had to have this chair and we could fix it (we could not) and he was kind enough to
bring it to a furniture repair shop since I loved it so much.  Thirty dollars later, I got my beloved
chair back, and he did mention it more than once.  Just as a reminder to innocent shoppers who
think they can fix anything.

But it gave us a fun memory, and one sturdy chair to repaint again and again.
This brings us to today.  I wanted a clean, white finish for the paint, so I chose a white latex paint,
and a super fun orange modern fabric I found at Jo-Ann’s a while ago.

I read the directions from cover to cover so I would have a good working knowledge of the sprayer.
This helped quite a bit, and I may even start reading directions from now on.  I tend not to, and just
kind of fly by the seat of my pants.  It doesn’t always work so well.

I used a large plastic drop cloth on my lawn, and placed my chair in the center, starting on the back
and working my way forward.  It didn’t take long to get the hang of how close to hold the sprayer to
the surface, and how to hold my hand to get good coverage.  I applied the first coat, let it dry, then
applied the second and it looked really good.  Excellent coverage, and after a coat of sealer to
protect her new white paint, she was looking amazing!

I covered the seat with the new fabric, used the screws underneath to attach it back to the frame,
and I cannot believe what a difference this made.  I have loved this chair for so long, this is by far
my favorite makeover she has ever had.  And yes, I am already planning my next project which
will probably be an IKEA tv console table hack.  It’s bor-ring and needs an update!

So after having a chance to use the HomeRight Finish Max Pro Fine Finish Sprayer, I will
be using it instead of painting by hand on my large projects for sure.  The clean up was super
easy, and I just poured my unused paint back it the container when I was done.  I’m pretty
sure I used less paint too since it was in the spray container and not sitting in a dish.

Am I alone in the long list of furniture I long to repaint? If you are looking for a sprayer to use,
especially for some of your larger projects, I am very pleased with this one!
