Mason Jar Chandelier

how to make a chandelier, mason jar, jar, upcycle, recycle, repurpose

When I bought this lampshade for it’s shape
(and price!) while thrifting a while ago, I didn’t
intend on using it for anything other than
a lampshade to recover.
I have had this idea for a while that I wanted
to try making an outdoor chandelier for my patio
and garden.

But I just had not found the right
base to use.  I thought about something
square or round.  Using some sort of wreath,
but I wanted it to be safe for use with real
candles should I want to do so.  I will probably
use the wick less candles while the kids are
little.   While cleaning looking at stuff
 around my work space,
I  came across  the humble lampshade.
Perfect base!

So, after removing the fabric and lining,
I discovered that these little guys are well made.
Each end required a long soak in hot water to
release the adhesive that had been used on the
top and bottom.  I gave it a good scrub with
a Brillo pad, and gathered up my supplies.
Here is what I used:
-mid sized lampshade with all fabric removed
-six medium mason jars
-two packages of plant hanging chain
(includes the “s” hooks you will need)
-19 (or so) gauge wire
-needle nose pliers with a wire snip at the base
-Extra lengths of glass beaded chain or
the equivalent to use around the edges
to make it pretty.
I began by attaching 12 links of chain to the top
of the lampshade in each of the three spots where
the metal pieces met.  (See picture below)
Next I wrapped the wire snugly around
the top of each jar under the lip, and attached
another 12 link length of chain to each side
creating a hanger for each jar.
Using the metal jump rings that were already
part of the glass beaded chandelier chain
I looped each around the top of the
lampshade, connecting the ends to each
metal rod around the top edge.
After that I used the “s” hooks that came
in the packages of hanging chain
to hang each of the mason jars evenly
around the bottom edge of the
chandelier. The weight was distributed
evenly and here is a picture of my
Mason Jar Chandelier.

We have a ways to go before the yard
is bursting with flowers since April
has just begun.  But all of that rain will
pay off in a beautiful summer.

In the meantime, I think I may use
this inside for now.  My little faded
lampshade, now a pretty chandelier.

Happy thrifting, junking & creating this week
hugs & blessings
xo, Tanya

I think you did a great job on this, how ingenious to use an old shade frame! I love how it turned out, and I have to pin so I remember I want to do something like this for our pool room. Fantastic!

So the secret is soaking in hot water to get the goo off? Seriously I thought that stuff was eternal, on the shades I peeled fabric off. I gave up. I will try soaking.
