Now that we are in full on spring mode around casa twelveOeight I keep seeing little spots that could use a pick me up. We have given the front living room a refresh and family room/den is next. There is a very drab tile mantel in dire need of some good vibes in the family room. So while that project is underway, I of course have to have 5 other things going at once. That’s normal right?
With the “new” family room mantel in mind I started thinking about what I would want to layer around it.
I thought about how I want the family room to feel, and I realized the feels are cozy but a bit more of a modern and vintage mix than the front living room. More cozy-den with all the pretty soft pillows but a bit of modern twist too.
And, I saw this old basket mixed in with our outdoor summer stuff and wondered why is sat all winter not being used. I guess it was waiting for a makeover!
If you don’t already have a big basket or woven planter they can be found at Goodwill, Home Goods you name it. Wicker is so popular right now they are pretty easy to find. And the other ingredient in this mix? Well some good old hot glue and a couple mop head refills. It looked great without the extra beaded trim around the top but I found this about a year ago at Goodwill brand new in the package and have been waiting for a project to use it on.
Baskets are beautiful just like they are, and I would not want to add trim or fringe to all of them but here and there this can add such a soft pretty yet modern spin to a simple basket!
There is really no need for a tutorial since I just hot-glued the pieces of mop strings all around the top of the planter first. I trimmed the pieces up about half way, and added the pre-strung beaded fringe all around the top with a little more hot glue. I love you hot glue, I really do.
Next I tried a couple different things with the strings but I liked them best just loose with some knots tied here and there to give them a little pizzaz.
And that was it, I think the whole project was less than $12 including the cost of the thrifted basket, two mop head refills and the thrifted trim!
For now this little gem is sitting in a sunny window in our living room but I think she may look pretty cool once we finish our family-room/den refresh and moody fireplace makeover.
Thank you so much for reading friend, I hope you have a fabulous week!!
