Shabby Planter Box How-to
I had sooo much fun with this planter box redo this weekend! I found it a few weeks ago at a local thrift store for less than two dollars (originally $3.49, but I found it on the half off sale day woot woot!) I knew I wanted to start out with painting it black, but I had to figure out if I wanted it to have a more modern look or shabby.
I used black spray paint, allowing it to dry for about 30 minutes between coats. It took three coats to cover the green plastic well. I did not use any primer or sand it at all, just used the type of spray-paint that works on plastic too.
I used a little bit of acrylic paint and a sponge-tipped brush to dab the green paint on (I used a light olive green) and allowed the stenciled areas to dry.
The planter box was coming together, and I usually like to sand the edges down a bit on a piece, but this is plastic. So, I used white acrylic paint to distress the planter by blotting the foam-tipped brush after loading with some white paint, and lightly brushed the edges and random areas to age the planter.
I used a coat of sealant so it would be safe to use outside and not lose it’s shabby fabulousness. And here is how it turned out. I really like the colors, and since my patio furniture is black, with black and white pillows, I think it will look really pretty. Now I just need to get to the nursery and begin planting!
Hope this brings some inspiration to you as you spruce up your nest on a dime!
Happy crafting, Tanya 🙂

This looks great! You would never know it was a plastic planter 🙂 Great tip for 'distressing' plastic by adding colour instead of removing it.
