Sofa Table Rehab

I am excited to share my latest makeover with you today! I have been planning this one for a while, and I finally had a few moments to put the finishing touches on it today.

We have had this little pine sofa table for quite a while.  I believe my husband used it in his office many years ago, and since then it has been a desk, catch-all, and most recently a workbench in my garage.

I began with a few good coats of flat white spray paint to cover the old, bare pine (you know I like my spray paint) and the search for a new stencil design.  I popped into Jo Ann’s recently and found this awesome set of high-quality stencils from none other than MS herself! 

I was pretty impressed by the quality and price as well.  I paid full price for them (I know, I know, at least I admitted it!) and they were only $12 for 12 stencils.  See, not a bad deal even at full price.

I used just a regular pouncer with a bit of mid-brown acrylic paint loaded onto it for the stencil.  I applied the stencil down the center first, then on each side, just eye-balling the placement on each side.  This was much easier by doing the center first. 

Yes, that is a sea-sponge.  Do you want to know how many years I have had this sponge? Since we were all watching In Living Color and listening to Color Me Badd.

How many of us had your entire kitchen sponge-painted in lavender and teal? Come on now, I’m not alone!  And I had forgotten about the man-shoulder pads (note the purple and yellow suits in above phote) Ok, back on topic.

It was hard not to stop right here because I loved the way the top of the table looked. But this will be a narrow table behind my desk, kind of a mock-credenza and I want the desk I refinish to be the focal point in the room.  After the paint dried, I sanded the table all over and mixed a little bit of black into the brown I used for the stencil onto damp sea sponge and applied it to the table top, using circular motions.

I wanted to top of the table to contrast slightly from the legs, and have a very old look to it.  I used just a small amount of paint that was fairly watered down from the sea sponge so just a thin film of the mixture ended up on the table.  Now we are cookin’!

And with a few of my office pretties that I have been gathering, it is beginning to come together. 

Yellow is happy, oh so happy, I love it.  Bright yellow, mustard, I’m not picky.

While I work on the larger pieces (mainly a large oak desk which will be my first experience with chalk-paint), I have a couple things done now for my new home office.  Getting closer!

I want it to be pretty but not too girly, with a good mix of modern, vintage, shabby and whatever else looks good together.  The thing I probably enjoy the most about decorating is that our homes can be a changing inspiration board of things we enjoy and are interested in. 

Do you have a space like my home office that has been bothering you for a while? It’s just not very functional and you don’t feel inspired upon entering that room? Start a Pinterest account if you don’t already have one, and create a board for that room.  Search for inspiration and begin to save everything to that board that you could think of doing in that room.  Don’t worry if there is a unicorn, a waterfall, and a few of Ryan Gosling’s “Hey Girls.” I have a few too 🙂 It will set your feet in the right direction.

    Love it! The table, the stencil, the paint finish, the Color Me Badd reference (come on, overalls were awesome!), the Pinterest advice, everything!

    It sounds like your vision for your office is a lot like the vision I have for my next office 🙂 I can't do a lot to change the one that I have now, but I certainly have my eye on some other rooms and furniture that I love.

    Gorgeous, Tanya! I just did this same thing on a little folding table using pink, cream, and gray ASCP. Love the way you aged and distressed it with that final technique. 🙂
