Union Jack DIY Wall Art

I have been wanting to make this for months, and while the design was in my head, the right materials had not come along yet.
Until I unearthed a large framed cork board
from my garage, a treasure from a neighbor’s yard sale.
And, the fabric I had been
looking for was discovered this weekend.
Beautiful charcoal gray and white cotton ticking…
Next aisle over, a bolt of a pretty grayish-khaki linen.
And for the background, the perfect go to: muslin!
I began by measuring my cork board and it ended up being exactly 24″ by 36″, which is a perfect size for my idea.
Giving myself a few extra inches around the edges
I cut enough muslin to cover the cork board.
I pressed the fabric well and pulled each section taut,
hot gluing in place as I went around the edge of the board.
I folded the fabric around the corners and tacked each down,
giving the front of my board a smooth surface as the background.
Next I measured, clipped and tore long strips
of the darker linen first, laying them in the pattern they would go.
I did the same with the cotton ticking, making the strips a bit more narrow so the linen would be a nice contrast behind the ticking.
I stretched each piece, measuring to make sure I was exactly in the center of each section.  Next I attached first the series of darker linen strips, then the ticking last.  I went in the same order with both fabrics, ending with the vertical piece on top.
After they were all in place and glued down, I used a few very fine lines of hot glue in a few places to hold the fabric strips in place.
I am really enjoying my Union Jack diy wall art,
and was even able to work in a little history lesson
with my 1st grader as well.  I wish every day of creating,
blogging and homeschooling came together like that.
When they do I have to write about it for those days
that don’t go so um…smoothly or planned 🙂
Thank you so much for creating with me today!

This is so cool! I have a large canvas that something like this would be perfect for. Just before the holidays we finished up an Amanda Bennett unit study on the U.K. Gotta love those magical days when it all lines up! (so rare over here) Thanks for the great inspiration 🙂
